How can you tell a 1972 from a 1971 K5 Blazer, if the two are sitting next to each other at a truck show, and both are stock, and you cant look at the VIN plate? are there tell tell signs?

A real 72 has the extra screw on the door near the vent wing.

It was a one year only thing

A cool way to figure out more is to open up an LMC catalog.

When you look at parts for sale in the catalog, there will be different part numbers for 69-70 K5 and 71-72 K5.... sometimes you'll see a special line for 1972 only.

1972 has unique thicker door panel inserts. This means that the door release and window crank shaft are longer than normal and makes them 1-year-only also.

I'm sure there are probably color combinations and/or trim combinations that would have been specific to 1972, but from a sheetmetal perspective....the doors and door panels are probably the easiest ones to notice.

sorry to hijack but whats the difference between the 69 and 70? i have always wondered

1972: -Plastic Door panels
-screw indentation above the door panel above the door panel
-frame is different at the rear of the body compared to earlier years (easily identified by 2 cut outs under the tailgate for the frame rails to come through)

72 was also the first year the rear view mirror was mounted on the windshield instead of the cab.

This is the item that had me ask the original question, the 72 I have the mirror is mounted to the windshield frame, but has a code sticker in the glove box, 205 shifter has the numbers on it, and the doors have the extra screw by the vent window, someone could have changed it at some point, the glass, glove box, doors and even the shifter looks original, I also have a 1969 Chevy suburban here and it's door panels/arm rest look different than the 72
What character digit in the VIN# would tell me what year, the door sticker has been painted, but the VIN# is on the sticker in the glove box.

Thanks for all the help!

The VIN is the final arbiter of what year it was built.

Personally, I've converted my windshield mount rearview mirrors to post style on both of my'72 trucks because I hate the windshield mount ones and the way then always seem to come unglued.

VIN decoding should be an easy one to "search" for..... :deal:

I hate glued mirrors too. Is converting just a matter of buying an older style mirror and bolting it on?

You have to drill three small holes in the windshild header for the factory mount.....pretty simple, but when in doubt start small. Oversized holes are lousy at holding screws in place. :D

72 has a special vin number compared to the rest.
72- if factory 4x4, will start with a K at the start of the number
67-71: will start with a CK
