Another long overdue update. The wondering was from steering box play. I don't know how changing pitman arms added play but tightening the sector screw helped.

I picked up xj steering shaft but found out 2wd steering columns are different. I might try to upgrade to a newer 4wd steering column.

I also updated the interior some. I'll post pictures later.

73-77 steering columns have splined ends, 78-87 are the squared ones that the XJ shaft fits. Its frustrating, I found out the hard way...

I did also. I am going to try to find a newer steering column though. I would like the high beam and wiper controls on the column.

I had to swap out a leaking heater core a few months ago and redid the interior some. I am install gtmat sound deadener and and painted most of the interior black. I got the headwater seat cover I while back but dont think I have posted it on here. It tough and fits great.

I also got black seat belts from a 80's truck for a few bucks at the junk yard. I had to modify the mounting brackets to install them but they are not retracting great. Does anyone have these seatbelts? Should they be level to the ground? They are tilted forward on my truck and they dont easily retract. You can see the angle in the below picture.

Just read this entire thread. What a great read. It epitomizes this forum exists. I had the opportunity to see tgs30's truck first hand yesterday when he swung by to pick up a steering column/wheel/box. Very cool truck; I was especially impressed with the Escalade engine & tranny swap. Well done. The bed also looks like a pro re-did it. Great build! :waytogo:

Thanks. The interior has come a long way. Once I upgrade the steering column not much should be left to improve.

I had to find and purchase internal parts for the steering column but finally got it swapped in. I was able to wire up the high beam switch but havent moved the wipers to the column yet.

I also switched to rcpd34's steering box but it is just as loose. I had already tightened the sector screw on my old box but that didnt last.

The whole reason I started looking for new steering columns was so could switch to the xj steering shaft and tighten up the steering some. The new column is the correct square end but somehow the xj shaft I got at the junkyard is smaller.

Started taking the truck back apart again today. A few things have been bothering me and need to be finished up.

My sending unit has never worked and I want to add a second tank. I already dropped the tank and found the issue with the sending unit. It was new Dorman unit but the cheap resister board has a brown connection. I should be able too fix it with a little solder.

I also still have the original non baffled tank and ordered another 87 sending unit. My plan is to setup two switches in the cab. One to switch fuel gauges and the other to pump the fuel into the primary tank.

The biggest issue I have had with the truck is a vibration when accelerating. I had a drive shaft shop balance my drive shaft and I changed u joints a few months ago but this didn't help. I think the next step is to rebuild the rear. I have been looking and think I am going to go with blazinzuk's idea and install a h2 e-locker.

If it's only making the vibration during acceleration you might consider dropping the rear driveshaft and trying it in front-wheel-drive only.

I tried running it with only the front drive shaft but my front drive shaft has a lot of slop and also vibrates but I don't think it was as bad. It's hard to tell though

Its been a while but I still have the truck. I will try to fix this thread and update the pictures. I have made a lot of small changes over the last few years but its primarily been a driver. Its currently back off the road as the trans is being rebuilt. I also found a h2 used h2 elocker that I am finally setting up. I think I learned about the h2 elocker working in the 14b sf here so thanks to who originally posted the info.

This is the first diff I have setup and I need help reading the pattern. I created a setup bearing from the used h2 pinion bearing. It looked to be in great shape. I decreased the pinion shim from .265" to .250 and this is where I am currently at. coast side with used gears? gears.jpg gears2.jpg
