My brain is so annoying sometimes... I was just watching videos on how to re prime 6.2 diesel motors. And now I think 6.2s are really cool... I could always put the 6.2 in place of the 396 and get some nice mpg! I won't. But now, I kinda want to.
I would not swap in a 6.2 in hopes of getting "nice mpg"...
Do so if you like them, but don't expect economy car mpg out of one,in a full sized square body..
Some diesel owners of 1/2 ton 2WD pickups claim to get 20+ mpg out of a 6.2,personally I find it hard to believe..maybe with an overdive or 5 speed ,but its a big maybe..
My 6200 lb. '82 K2500 with a TH400 and unknown ratio gearing that feels pretty high as far as highway cruising at 65 mph goes,I'd guess its only revving about 2200 or so..
I recently filled the tank to the brim, and after 160 miles of combined city ,rural highway and high speed highway use, along with maybe 15 minutes of idling time,it took 10.6 gallons to top the tank off yesterday...that equates to 15 mpg...
I have owned several '71 and '72 trucks with 350's and 4 bbl carbs that could pull that kind of mileage..also had a '74 454 that got 13-15 mph on most "normal" driving..
If your truck has larger than stock tires, low gearing, like 4:10's or lower,no overdrive, and is a 3/4 or 1 ton,the 6.2 will be working pretty hard all the time to lug it around, winding out on the highway..
I wouldn't expect more than 12 mph out of one..
I know of several 4x4's as heavy as mine is from the 1990's and 2000's that are getting 15-17 mpg consistently, sometimes a tad more on highway commutes..with both older Vortec V8's and the LS engines..
In my eyes the diesel is not better on fuel, and diesel costs more ,though lately the prices are half what they were about a year ago..
I just paid 2.07 a gallon to fill up yesterday..
In closing, the diesels are OK,but add up the cost of glow plugs, frequent filter & oil changes, etc, they may end up costing more to own than less..especially if you end up needing an injector pump or other work done to it..
