1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

This! Coming home Saturday! I have waited like 15 years for this!

Classic.

Congrats on the buy, be good looking when its done for sure. 60s never hurt anyone.

Why GM never put a 60 in a Suburban is kind of stupid too. The 454 being a PITA to get the way I would have wanted it is also kind of dumb. Its a shortened crew cab length wise, with extra seating instead of a bed, why did they get so restrictive for virtually the exact same rig. That always seemed stupid to me.

I agree! You should have been able to get a one ton, 4x4, 454 suburban!

Just like you should have Ben able to get a duramax suburban! Don't know what they have against the burbs...

My brain is so annoying sometimes... I was just watching videos on how to re prime 6.2 diesel motors. And now I think 6.2s are really cool... I could always put the 6.2 in place of the 396 and get some nice mpg! I won't. But now, I kinda want to.

Congrats on the find. I'm excited to see you start the swap. I need more motivation to do mine also.

I'm excited also! Can't wait to see it all done with those nice white wheels and that big hub sticking out from them! Will be so beautiful!

I would not swap in a 6.2 in hopes of getting "nice mpg"...
Do so if you like them, but don't expect economy car mpg out of one,in a full sized square body..

Some diesel owners of 1/2 ton 2WD pickups claim to get 20+ mpg out of a 6.2,personally I find it hard to believe..maybe with an overdive or 5 speed ,but its a big maybe..

My 6200 lb. '82 K2500 with a TH400 and unknown ratio gearing that feels pretty high as far as highway cruising at 65 mph goes,I'd guess its only revving about 2200 or so..

I recently filled the tank to the brim, and after 160 miles of combined city ,rural highway and high speed highway use, along with maybe 15 minutes of idling time,it took 10.6 gallons to top the tank off yesterday...that equates to 15 mpg...

I have owned several '71 and '72 trucks with 350's and 4 bbl carbs that could pull that kind of mileage..also had a '74 454 that got 13-15 mph on most "normal" driving..

If your truck has larger than stock tires, low gearing, like 4:10's or lower,no overdrive, and is a 3/4 or 1 ton,the 6.2 will be working pretty hard all the time to lug it around, winding out on the highway..
I wouldn't expect more than 12 mph out of one..

I know of several 4x4's as heavy as mine is from the 1990's and 2000's that are getting 15-17 mpg consistently, sometimes a tad more on highway commutes..with both older Vortec V8's and the LS engines..
In my eyes the diesel is not better on fuel, and diesel costs more ,though lately the prices are half what they were about a year ago..
I just paid 2.07 a gallon to fill up yesterday..
In closing, the diesels are OK,but add up the cost of glow plugs, frequent filter & oil changes, etc, they may end up costing more to own than less..especially if you end up needing an injector pump or other work done to it..

No I won't do it even if I want to. I know I couldn't live with no power. If was going to ever do a diesel swap it would be a Cummins anyway. The future is uncertain about which engine this truck will ultimately have in it. I think the 396 will live on for at least another year or two probably. I have been thinking a lot about just slapping a 5.3 in it to tide me over. They are so cheap and easy to deal with that I figure I could put one in and then whenever I wanted, pull it and sell it as a turn key swap motor in favor of a later model 6.0 or an 8.1 or possibly Cummins. I got a while till I start worrying much about the motor one way or another.

I like your idea for the 396. It suits the truck very well.

I love my 6.2, but it doesn't match the personality of an earlier square body that is as nice looking as yours. Plus, good fuel economy would require a conservative fuel metering and no-fun torque curve. My 6600lb suburban got 20-23 mpg routinely in factory, though gutless, form. Merging to 55mph was an adventure. Now, at more like 7400lbs and with a lot more torque turning 38s, it's in the 16/17mpg range on the highway, and that's after a lot of small adjustments to the timing and fuel metering.

Yea I'm sure. Given the choice I would most desire a late model VVT 6.0 vortec motor with a 6l90. That would be my ideal setup. But that's also more than I am likely to be able to afford. Ever. Probably in the $6k range? So it's impossible to say what the future holds for sure. If I was a betting man, I would bet it gets a standard old school 6.0 4l80e combo. Which would be just fine also!
