well ive got an 82 c-10 pickup out here and its got a 12 bolt rear axle with TAB stamping code, im not sure why or how its got a 12 bolt when 82 is supposed ot be 10 bolt
my stepdads 82 K-10 has 8.5 axles under it, maybe its a 2wd thing, 12 bolts carried over on 2wd but not on 4x4 in 82 ?

anyoen know why, and also what ratio TAB is for 12 bolt rears ?

thanjks

This has been discussed many many times. There wasn't any specific year or date that GM stopped using 12 bolts, they just started in the late 70's and had 'em phased out sometime in the early 80's. So some trucks got the 12 and some got the 10...who knows... /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

No help whatsoever, but if anyone has an '82 truck parts manual, it will be listed there.

My '85/86 parts manual lists 1982 rear axles, but model is "S1", while later years are listed as C or K 1,2,3. Since it lists "S1" I doubt it will be correct for your application, especially since "TAB" isn't listed at all.

I've heard of 12 bolts in 82s before, not common but it happened. I've never heard of one in anything later than 82 though...

well my 82 has 10bolts front/rear..wish it had a 12 bolt sometimes, would be alot easier to drop a detroit in there!
went to the junkyards today, found a bunch of 12 bolts, but it would be nice to find one already locked! anyways...

That's easy. '82 was the final year that the 12 bolts were the standard axle under the K5's and 10's. 10 bolts were the standards starting in '83. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

interesting

i missed that last discussion then

i always wondered how some of the 79 or so vans had an 8.5" axle instead of a 12 bolt,

my 81 c-10 has a 8.5" and the 82 is same truck same 52" springs and all but 12 bolt

wierd stuff.....

thanks
