1982 Chevy K30 Dually

i love pics of our trucks being used for real truck things.. makes me happy.

Who needs an alternator when you've got a diesel? :D

The fact that is was raining (heavy downpour) so I had to have wipers and headlights was my only minor concern. But, I have driven gas trucks farther at night with a bad alternator, so I knew I would make it.

I figured out why the bolt sheared off... someone left the bottom alternator bracket off when the motor was replaced at some point. I thought there was a little too much room to work when I was drilling out the bolt to remove it from the block :doah:

On the upside, I have an extra bracket and the hardware to put it on already sitting on a shelf. Now i just need to finish getting what is left of the bolt out. A bolt extractor and small torch didn't get it moving so I have it soaking in PB blaster for now. I may need to break out the big torch and get it hot if it is held in with loctite.

Now that I am done with school for summer and back from my road trip last week, I dug into the truck and removed the heads. Money is tight right now so this will be a simple clean up the heads and swap them from side to side type of job.

While I am in there, I am also replacing the wiper motor and hydroboost booster since I had the parts sitting on my workbench for the last 6 months.

Ok, so what does the swapping of the heads from side to side do?

Ok, so what does the swapping of the heads from side to side do?

It moves the damaged bolt hole to the back of the drivers side head rather than the front of the passenger side head. That way I can install the alternator. I was never able to remove what was left of the bolt and actually cracked the edge of the bolt hole in the process. Luckily, it is not a structural part of the head where it cracked so I can fill it with a little epoxy and move it to the rear.

Gotcha. Makes sense. Didn't realize the 6.2 heads were symetrical.

Heads are back on tonight. Still have a lot to button up tomorrow and I need to decide if I am going to go buy a second set of head bolts to replace the ones I over torqued tonight :doah: I mis-read the torque specs on my phone tonight and went to 120 ft-lb on 4 or 5 of them (75 ft-lb on the rest). I need to bite the bullet and get two more sets and do it right.

This is where I stopped for the day. Heads are back on with intake and exhaust. I need to button up the accessories on the front of the motor, change fuel filters, and change oil/filter. Then all that will be left is to finish installing the rebuilt hydroboost.

After charging the battery all night, I was able to finish bleeding the air out of the system and she is running again. I now have to wait for an injector fuel return line kit before I go too far though. I damaged one of the lines when trying to heat up what was left of the broken bolt and forgot to order a new one before I started working on it.

I am considering a two tone scheme when I repaint the truck. Either white or silver down the sides and on the cab roof with wheels painted or powder coated to match.

I had the black with silve rbottom and orange pinstriped seperation on the 88 and it looked sharp.

I was helping a friend move his collection of truck parts today. Good news is he gave me a set of (3) aluminum wheels for my pickup box trailer since the 4th was split in half. The bad news is I lost oil pressure on the way home. I nursed it home without any weird noises so I am hopeful it is only a failing sending unit.

If the motor does have to come out it is time to start looking at comparing an LS 6.0 swap vs a newer turbo diesel. I think the LSx swap will win out at this point due to cost and how little I drive this truck.

Ouch. Hopefully just the sending unit or gauge.
