I'm going to look at an AZ original '84 K5 later today or tomorrow, and would like some input from the crowd.

The Good:
SM465 (I really want a manual)
Second owner, 150k miles, Carfax verified
Working A/C
Silverado package
Interior appears to be in excellent condition via pictures, will verify
Exterior also looks to be excellent
No suspension modifications, all stock other than aftermarket factory sized rims
The AZ color combo that I’d most desire, white ext., saddle interior.

The Bad:
305
Will not pass Maricopa County emissions, registered in another county for the past five years
Passenger window won’t operate. (yawn, no biggie)
Asking price $6500

I’ve only spoke with the wife so far, but it sounds like it needs a new cat for emissions. They have a second house up north, and that part of the state does not require testing. I *could* do the same thing, but I can use that as a bargaining tool. The 305 really nags at me though, maybe more so the carb nags at me. I’d really like this same package in a ‘87+ but I think the odds are going to be pretty high finding a 4 speed in such great condition. Regardless, I’m thinking somewhere around $3,500 plus or minus 500 as a more realistic starting price, would you concur?

If I were to put a new 350, or more likely a 383, does anyone have a clear idea what Maricopa County’s rules are regarding fueling it? I.E. could I go with some sort of fuel injection and pass from a component standpoint?
I plan on using this as my DD instead of my ’05 Duramax CC LB that is racking up the miles! I have a 36 mile round trip commute in north Scottsdale that consists of 8 lights and 6 miles of dirt/washboard. I’d also use for hunting and light off-roading like I’ve done here in AZ for the past 40 years. No rock crawling or mudding.

Thanks for any input.

that price sounds WAY high. i bought my 82 back in 2004 for $1200. not the exact same setup, but close enough for a basic price comparison. differences:

mine

350 instead of 305
700R4 instead of manual
custom deluxe (i wanted basic for mudding)
my interior was decent, exterior good. the one you're looking at may be a little better, but talk them down A LOT.

and as far as the carb goes, i prefer tbi, also, but my q-jet runs great. it takes a few seconds longer to start up and i watch the bouncing offroad, but i've never stalled from angle and i don't change a thing year-round. 30 degrees or 105 degrees, it runs fine.

i say its way to high of a price unless its like flawless inside and out. i would look around for something with a 350 and a lower price tag...

PRice is way too high.

Also dont be afraid of the 305cid. Mine runs pretty good with Full length headers, dual exhaust and holley carb. :D

Bought mine from Arizona for $1000.00. 1984 350, 700r4, 10 blt FR/RR w/ LSD. Custom Deluxe trim. No rust, minor dings, just needs a lil tlc here and there.

Thats what they actually go for out here in AZ for a pretty body and awesome interior . if you pass on it , someone else will pick it up .

I have seen some go lower , and some go higher , but thats what they go for . AZ people know they have rust free chit .

Well, I gave the Good, the Bad, now here is the Ugly!

Marginal white overpaint that must have been 5 years old. Interior, while not ripped, was really stained. Many missing vac lines and other emissions stuff. Then the owner goes into how it started have a miss 'all of a sudden' and that his mechanic claims the timing chain has jumped a tooth. My guess the miss is ignition related, maybe the knock sensor system, from the way it ran. Rear tailgate had a big punch hole in it. Two, two-way radio antenna mounts on roof. He didn't want to take it out as there was no plate. I wasn't interested at that point anyway. I told the guy that it was *maybe* worth 2k, and I was being nice. Further that I wanted TBI. At that he offered to throw in a '90 2WD Burb that was behind it for free. Apparently it has a blown head gasket. I'd like a project, but not that much of one.

As Pauly stated, it seems that true AZ K5's are holding their value pretty well. Not too many rust donors here, just overall beat to he!! ones.

Back to my 87+ SM465 search.

Yeah thats not worth it with what you described , that sounds like a 3k truck . The first post description sounded nicer LOL .

As for emissions , its pretty easy here , if it looks right , and passes sniffer its probably ok . Meaning egr , smog pump , pcv , and vapor can .

Hossbaby50 passes with a Tuned Port setup . I pass with a carb and every single hose simplified with no vacuum switches . Its easy if it looks right and blows clean :thumb:

if that's the case, give the AZ dealers and private sellers the "your number one" sign, and hop a plane to texas. we have a huge number of trucks here, and no rust problems, and much better prices. i'm not including the $50K f350s and stuff.
