I meant to jump on here a bit earlier, but it looks like you accomplished your task. I've got a little expertise here, I've been to tons of official training and have reconstructed over ten fatal accidents. An older vehicle like a K5 will fare better than most newer cars in a collision under 35-40 mph. Height is a major factor as is size...dyeager535 is correct in his post. Less intrusion is good. While weight and stiff metal may make you think you're safer, actually the newer vehicles are designed to "crumple" and break apart to absorb energy, making them safer in a collision at any speed. The vehicle sacrifices itself to protect the occupants. You certainly couldn't drive home a newer vehicle after striking a concrete wall, it would be destroyed. But that destruction helps take energy away from the occupants...as does bending a heavier gauge of steel. It takes a lot of energy to bend a frame, which takes energy away from the occupants.
As was mentioned, seatbelts make all the difference. Make sure your floors aren't rusted where the seats and belts attach. I have no problem having my daughter, my neighbors kids, and my wife all loaded up in my truck for an outing...I put new belts in when I purchased it, along with new seats I would suggest high backs) and reinforced the floor where the seats bolt on. Make sure your windshield isn't cracked or broken. Keep that steering column and gearbox tight. You'll all be fine, just wear your belts and look out for nuts on the road!
Congrats on the new addition to your family...I'm sure you will all have fond memories with her...and in all likelyhood, all of your youngsters will probably be driving that thing to high school!

I’m going to become a member here this weekend so I can show pictures. The truck is extremely clean. Would be tough to find rust with a microscope. I feel like I got a good one. It really is turn key.
like any new project, I’ll take it in phases. Sounds like my first order of business would be to add the recommended safety features from everyone’s comments. Who knows how long it will take for me to get to all of them but the most important with regard to protecting the family and friends and putting my wife at ease.
From there, even though I actually love how it stands, I’ll start adding some simple bells and whistles. Nothing too crazy! It should be fun
I would love for the boys to be able to enjoy it as they get older. I’m sure they’d be the talk of the town rollin into school with an 85’ blazer ha ha

Hey guys,
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I found a K5 that I’m seriously considering buying. My only holdup is my wife’s concerns with safety. She wants a fairly detailed list of safety features that the truck offers I mean obviously there aren’t any modern safety features but what are some of the common features of the 85’? In general, are they pretty safe trucks? We have 3 boys ranging from 6-11 that I’d love to be able to cruise around with. She is just really concerned with the possibility of getting into an accident. With no air bags, headrests etc... she’s afraid
I feel like I found a really good buy and hope I can put her at ease with some facts.

as long as you are happy it is irrelevant what the rest of us think. I am one of the guys that remember being able to buy them for $1000 or so. it is amazing how much they have shot up in value in the last few years.
Sweet ride man. Looks like a Chevy guy owned it. I noticed the Chevy “V” flag on the dash and the serpentine swap with remote p.s. resevoir. Looks clean!

Couldn't agree more Jeff. To me, this truck is priceless and I'm assuming we all feel that way. I'm never letting this one go. One day the boys will be driving the K5

Thanks man, appreciate it! That's what I was thinking too. Definitely a Chevy guy. I mean I've seen some pretty beat up Blazers. Couldn't believe how clean it was inside.... thought I was going to have to do a full interior job but I was pleasantly surprised. Fairly turn key
