Well, the alternator was bad, so I am in the middle of replacing it. I started almost a week ago......
I did find out that it is a 1991 L98.
Here you can see I do have a different alternator on it finally.
The previous owner was a bit of a cobble jockey. So I am having to fix some of that. My biggest issue though was that it still had the stupid Torx hardware that Chevrolet thought was so cool to use on the Camaro engines. Stripped out both of the screws that hold the alternator to the aluminum bracket. Drilled the small one out, and tried to pry the alternator over to loosened the big one up. Broke the aluminum bracket instead. So I robbed the driver side serpentine bracket off of an ‘89 Suburban parts rig. Got it on there, and remembered that the Camaro brackets are different than the truck brackets. They set the belt further away from the engine. That meant I had to go rob the rest of the accessory drive parts off of the Suburban.
While I was doing that, I found the return fuel line that he had routed behind the alternator bracket, was leaking. I went to the local CASE IH dealer, and had them make me a new hydraulic hose to match the one he used. When I put it on, and tried to reinstall the alternator bracket, I found why it leaked. It was crushed between the head and the bracket. Horrible routing. There are two hard lines that run from the front of the intake manifold, and behind the bracket on a stock TPI engine. The PO had used the pressure line, and eliminated the return. Not sure why. So I had to return to my old place for the third or fourth time, and grab a hard line for the return. That fixed that issue, but now my hydraulic line is way too long.
Probably going to replace the leaky radiator while I am in there, along with a host of other PO repairs.
I paid WAY too much for this thing.
