1993 454 Temperature Sender Coolant Draining

How much coolant do I have to drain from the radiator before I change the temperature sender on a 1993 454?
 
I'd guess about 1- 2 gallons--thats about how much leaks out of you pull it out without draining it first......if it's in an spot where you can access it pretty easily,you might be able to just remove it and have the new one ready to go,and stab it in quickly,before you lose much coolant..

If it's an electrical sender its best not to use teflon tape or a lot of pipe thread sealer on the threads,it can interfere with the good ground it needs to work right..a little dab is enough..
 
Depends on which one you pull, you don't technically have to drain any, if you can be quick enough with the new part, leave the cap on and tight, only a little bit will leak out.
 
It can be installed dry if you wish,the pipe threads are tapered and will seal well without any sealer--if you feel it has to have some,I use some pipe thread sealer in paste form or some Indian Head gasket shellac...you dont want it to end up insulating it from ground so you dont need all that much...

I've installed sending units with no sealer and the few that did weep a bit at first some soon sealed themselves up..
 
I don't use any sealer on those types of block threaded sensors, it gets part of it's reading from the grounding of the engine block, sure the threads may get some contact from tightening/rubbing on the threads, but since most of the sensors are tapered brass, they're fine without anything on them.
 
Thank you for the information. I put a little teflon pipe sealant on it then quickly inserted it after I removed the old one. I only lost a little antifreeze. It works now.
