1999 K2500 Suburban

The "impression" in the floor is kinda half there but not fully. Its enough to get you aligned front to back but depth you have to cut a little at a time if you don't have the template from a manual truck.

I used the backing plate as a guide to how far I should cut and it came out pretty good. The wires/receptacles for the shifter bulbs were actually already there. Just had to put lightbulbs in them.

Interesting enough the 98' Np241 with a 27 spline already had the skinny 6010N bearing in there. The planetary is the same Np246/Np241 so I just put the whole thing in. So if any body needs a spare 241 6 pinion planetary I have one with 27 spline input. 95' and up.

Need to get more pics of the completed bezel but I got the whole stock setup out of a 96' off ebay. Didnt feel like crawling around a u pull at -25 degrees.

Used the front driveshaft out of the wrecked 96' which had an Np243. Ended up using the rear shaft as well since after the swap i noticed the Np241 is 5/8" shorter on the rear than the Np246.

I used Laurence LT Tolmans video on YouTube for guidance on this whole swap. He says you can reuse the 246 rear shaft but I felt a little bit too much up/down play with it splined in for my taste. I had the 243 rear shaft so I measured and sure enough its longer so I put it in.

Hopefully I will be doing mine soon.
Is that the spot for the nv4500 also there?

Yes it is. I thought that was neat as well.

I got the vss and shift indicator plugs new off RockAuto since Autozone and Oreillys wanted like $40-60 a piece... Got 2 of each for $40 shipped.

Rostra 610018
Ultra Power 2701050

Shift rod was from a 4l60. Had to add exactly 1.5" to make it perfect with the 4l80e.

Love the burb dude. I like all you’ve done to it.

The odd misfire on #4 misfire sounds annoying after all you’ve done. But most of what you’ve already done does look like it needed it. Question I have since you already pulled the upper and lower intake what did the harness look like that went to the injectors and the ignition module and coil.

Reason I ask is that sub harness is known for getting cooked living in between the upper and lower plenums. Weird stuff happens, worst being it killing power to the icm causing it to stall or not start. Though the specific issue with the #4 misfire with that harness would have to be in the section in the harness for the #4 injector.

Again I bring it up as a possibility, not knowing the condition of that harness or not. The crappy part is what you have to do to get to that harness plus if you needed to get the replacement harness I’m certain it’s long discontinued from GM now. Just food for thought as that harness and the heat cooking the icm in its stock location are common on the L29’s.

I got all my parts from a 92 that I parted including driveshaft wires, everything and it's a 32 spline.

Totally understand where your coming from. The harness to me felt great when I was manipulating it in my hands when swapping injectors. Didnt seem to be cooked too bad like others you grab that have been around exhaust. Even the electrical tape was in good shape. Possibly had been replaced in the past some time? Only thing that was wrong was the locking clip for injector #1 was broke so it's just friction it holding it on right now.

Obviously this is just feel and there could still be something wrong internally. But the spark plugs all look good when I pulled them and i no longer have the rich codes with the injector swap.

My other thought is if the harness had an issue I would see misfires on that cylinder at more than just 2000 rpm lugging in 4th? If i shift to 3rd and the rpms kick up the misfire goes away and the counter on my scanner doesn't show any either.

At this point I have ruled the 0411 swap as the cause of the issue since the tune is not optimized. And since I wont be taking full advantage of the additional features I currently have my original black box on its way back from Black Bear with a traditional tune. Going to swap back over this weekend and hopefully eliminate all the issues that didnt come up until I did the swap in the first place.

Also ordered new door pins/bushings since the Dormans i installed 1 month ago already disintegrated. Went with the Cunningham Machine setup since they are regarded as the best and I don't want to do it again.

Awesome. You got the whole kit. And you don't have to worry about the input shaft difference.

Since I wanted to rob my 32 spline from the 246 I had to make sure to get a 95 and later 241.

Good to know the injector harness looked and felt good. The downside to the L29 is there is really no way to put your hands on that harness when it’s running for like wiggle testing to see if you can make the problem able to be reproduced.

You are probably on to something with the 0411 controller being more sensitive to detecting misfires more than actually having a problem. A misfire to a specific cylinder that is consistent usually can be checked by swapping a component over like an injector, spark plug or wire to a know good cylinder. Knowing the plugs and wires are fresh it rules out those. The injectors being fresh would rule out that side too. Add into the fact it’s not felt and only seen by looking at the data would at least make me feel it’s probably nothing to worry about.

Going back to the black box with a tune was a smart move if you aren’t going to take advantage of the 0411’s better ability to tune. L29’s are the kinda the forgotten sibling to other efi setups just because it’s at the very beginning of the OBDII era and it’s shorter production run. Hard to believe the built the 8.1 longer than the L29. Plus since the 8.1 used all the same architecture that the LS engine family for controls and logic as well as parts it does make it a little easier to deal with.

I’m still a fan of the L29 for sure. It’s key advantage is still the compatibility to all big block speed parts, unlike the one off 8.1 that nothing really is compatible with. Definitely cheaper to upgrade an L29 than it will ever be for an 8.1 if you want to really increase HP/TQ.

Looking forward to how it works on a tuned black box.

Completely agree. I have to say the thing runs great and without the light I would have no idea its even "misfiring". It is frustrating since I think the 0411 swap is marketed by a lot of people as a simple straight forward deal.

But after spending quite a bit of time on GMT400 forum the general consensus is you HAVE to custom tune them. Base tunes will get you going but for the 7.4 guys there was so much different MAF wise to the L19 in the Vans that has to be accounted for.

Several individuals said no matter what when they start a tune for a gmt400 with 0411 they automatically soften the misfire table by 25% without even a thought. Since they know how much more sensitive it is over the black box.

Interior pics. I put led bulbs in the receptacles. Front one doesn't light up im guessing since this isn't a factory manual t case vehicle i am not correctly completing the ground for it. Later I will just run the ground either from the indicator switch or off the other bulb and be done.

For now im not complaining!

She lives. With no codes, no misfires, nada. I can sleep peacefully tonight. Took me about 2 hours to swap it back to the black box.

I can tell it isn't as smooth at idle as the 0411 but I don't really care. It runs good.
