I beat the hell out of them, but I don't want to mess up the shafts. I'm thinking heat...

i beat mine out with a hammer and socket.try spaying penetrating fluid of some sort for a couple of days.maybe itll loosen up.you can try heat but it may weaken the shaft if you heat it too much
use a press, a hammer can bend the ears pretty easy

yep took me a BJ press and about 4-5 hours to change my first one
Cut the ears off of the u joint, then try and beat them out.
Cut so that only the cap and as little joint is left in each ear of the shaft.

I cheat and pay my local driveline shop $15 to do it for me. 
Seems like a better deal than wasting hours of my time and frustration doing it myself.

thats how i used to do them, just take a cut off wheel and cut the ujoint out then you only have one cap at a time to press out.

Go get yourself a ball joint press. It works good for u-joints.
I got one from HF and its too small. At least it was cheap.

I took mine over to the auto hobby shop when I was in Illinois. The pressure gauge hit almost 4000PSI before they broke loose. The employees there just walked out of the room....

Did you get the grey one? Looks like a c-clamp with a hole in the end. Chuck it up, put a couple spins on it and BANG it comes out. They always worked great for me
Even on trucks that spent their life in OH, and my Jimmy that was driven on NC beaches.
That's the one. The hole is too small. I welded in a spacer, but I cannot get the thing to move at all.
Is this on a D60?
Yep.
I didn't think of that at first. I was using it on 10B and D44s.
