Got a buddy (that's the guy who asks you to help him install an engine while he watches from inside the house, in front of the fire) who needs to add some sort of rear axle lock mechanism.

Since I'm out of this loop since 2004, what are the variables? He has a GMC XL K2500 Yukon, with the 8-lug wheels, 6.0L O/D Auto Transmission and push button 2-4WD-Auto switchpack on the dash.

He says he doesn't have a 14 bolt cover and DOES believe he has a "C-Type" arrangement, 'cause there's no cover or axle and nut-and-taper locks on an axle end either.

To me, that sounds like a "C-Type" but I do never remember having a 2500 series with that setup.

What questions do I need to answer for some information here?

TIA, Joe.

Pretty sure that truck has a 14 bolt semi floater. Pretty standard item for parts availability. Confirm with the shape of the different cover to a chart.

If it is the semi-floating 14, it will have C clips. I would check to see if it has a G80 in it. (Gov-loc)
Does he want an automatic locker, or selectable?

That looks like the SF 14 bolt to me.
I am surprised that it doesn't have a G80 already. I ended up with 2 of those axles that both had the G80, I figured it was fairly common.

Yeah, no G80 RPO code in the glovebox on this one. I'd like to put one in. Does the SF use a 10.5 dia. Ring gear?

I've seen it stuck in it's own flat driveway, not able to drive over a 3" berm from a snowplow.

I always tease him about it having 1 1/2 Wheel Drive. If it had the G80, then he's prolly blown it to smithereens.

The next move I guess is to pull the rear cover and look-see.

The semi-floating 14 has a 9.5" ring gear.
I don't know if you need to know what gear ratio it has before looking for a different carrier for the upgrade. If you go to www.ringpinion.com you can look at options and also verify your axle.

Could prolly find a whole axle from the junkyard cheaper than buying just the locker. Pretty sure they are the same as a truck, and how many 99-up trucks are out there??

That makes sense to me because I don't really want to play with setting lash with new bearings on a previously uninstalled carrier and pinion setup.

It's also Minus 12F this morning. ..... and that takes a lot of initiative out of me. I'd rather sit in front of the woodstove and drink Earl Grey and eat German Pancakes right now.

If he wants a Gov-loc, just swap the carrier. Put the existing ring gear on the carrier he wants. Then all that needs to be checked is backlash before it comes out to make it go back with the same. Since the pinion isn't moved, no big deal.
But I guess it would depend on if you find a complete axle for the right price.

I'm going to check resources in the area to see if there's any use differentials available from drum to drum.

Barring that we'll look for converting the carrier in the unit to put the old gear on thenew carrier.

It always seems to me that the dimensions are slightly different even on carrier to carrier changes stock from the manufacturer. So installing a new manufactured carrier from the third party may prove to be problematic.

Like I say, I will check around for a while see what we can find.

The sources for used parts in Montana are pretty slim because there's only one four wheel drive junkyard about twelve or fifteen miles north of us here.

Sometimes we have to reach out to Idaho or Washington State to find something. Then there's the prices...... sometimes used parts are more expensive than new parts.....just saying.
