I need some info for a co worker. She has a 2002 suburban that is leaking oil bad. she took it to get an oil change and the rear main seal needs to be replaced. She took it for an estimate and they quoted $1500. Told her that the engine will have to be pulled and will take 10 to 12 hours.

Is this the case? I've never had to mess with one but I didn't think you had to pull the engine.

Any help for her would be great. Thanks

engine or trans, either one, it's right between them.

I think she should get another person to look it over though, could be oil cooler lines or pan gasket and the shop wants more out of it to make that buck.

The back of the pan and rear main seals are common to leak on these. Pulling the Trans is definitely the preferred method though and should not cost 1500 bucks.

the rear engine cover should be resealed while there, its another common leak and they have updated the gasket for it. like others said tho the cooler lines, pan, rear main and rear cover are all common leaks, especially on the early 2000 years

Just curious. What did they end up doing for repair and cost. I charge $1000 for RMS, and oil pan, pretty typically especially anyone dealing with one of these cars prop.experiences 1or 2 broken exhaust bolts or.studs
