this truck does this when it feels like it . no rime or reason time line wise .

mostly in the summer heat season . but last night in the 0* - -2* or so temps it did it to me again .

any ideas on how to stop it ?

as it puts the truck in limp mode reduced power and has to be turned off or code cleared when driving it .

Have you looked into PIP# 4526. Says the fuel line can collapse when hot/soft.
Have you ever rebuilt your filter head?

its the truck i drive for work .

filter was replaced by me with a baldwin brand unit under 10k miles ago . if i use other brands like napa thats plastic body it will threw the code almost off the start .

filter head rebuild ? ? ?

pip# 4526 ? ? ?

addded info in o.p. re read .

Yeah you know, filter head rebuild. Lol.
There's a rebuild kit for the part where the fuel filter screws on, with the primer button. They can suck air and throw codes. The 4526 is a gm tech bulletin that tells of the plastic fuel line getting soft and collapsing causing low fuel pressure codes.
Does it still have the plastic bowl water seperator thing on the bottom? That may need replaced.

yes still plastic thingy . but not hooked up with the plug in . and no light in dash .

will look in to rebuild kit info for head .

lines are oem on truck .

I would start by rebuilding the filter head or replacing it. www.merchant-automotive.com/10192-Duramax-Filter-Head-Rebuild-Kit.aspx

There are a number of places that sell rebuild kits, this is just one example.

I have had the best luck with the Delco filters, they are about the same price or less than any other brand, 10k is too many miles on a filter IMO they are usually restricted enough to set a 87 code after 6-7k, I've even had them plug at 5k. Just spin a new one on at every oil change.

Have a good hard look at the flexible portions of the fuel lines. They tend to degrade and will collapse causing the CP3 to have to pull really hard to get fuel and can reduce the outlet pressure.

did a acdelco filter sunday and let it sit in the shop for few hr's before that .

seems to be o.k. today . this is the first time ever on me it has limited to 2200 rpm or so . any other time it just tosses a code and then limp mode .

and good / better / best hose to replace with ?

When mine did that I had fuel injectors leaking . Check your oil level . If it's pass the full mark you have a leak . That will drop the pressure . I did the fuel filter thing first .

Yeah like others have said start with the suction side of the fuel system first, like lines and filter. I’ve seen this code caused more from the high pressure side though, especially in high mileage trucks. The fuel injectors will return too much fuel and the cp3 cannot keep up.

There are return flow tests you can do, they are kinda time consuming though. To start I would use a nice scan tool and monitor actual vs commanded fuel rail pressure. See if the actual is dropping of slowly or if it tanks suddenly. That can narrow down a few things.

seems to be fine sofar with the delco filter .

plan on doing the filter head rebuild kit when the weather brakes .

truck has 179k miles . . .

my buddy has a BIG snap-on scanner for his shop so he could do a ride along as I drive it and he watches the read outs .

well update time

she started again tossing p0087 code . she did it to me 6 times in 20 mins the other day . was climbing a good grade of hill with a big elevation change .

so the weather is nice out and i dug in to the filter and suction hose side at the filter head .

got the rebuild kit napa # 827-0110 under 30 bucks . listed for 2500-3500 trucks only but ass was the same as my 5500 med duty truck .

got 2 foot of hd fuel rated 1/2" hose and 4 clamps . ( side note get 3ft of hose the extra will make it nice and lay out the radius better in the bend )

the rebuild kit went good and super easy no problems .

the original hose from filter to cp3 line at engine once i removed it and removed the anti chafe stuff i found the hose was 3/4 flat just laying on the bench . so i bet it was sucking flat on my as with no real effort i can pinch it clean off .

the med duty 4500-5500 engines have the filter on the driver side . it makes it a bear to get at . i had never done one and it took me 1.5hrs . had to remove the boost tube / move the coolant bottle away / remove 2 massive electrical plugs and brackets . then she come out . i then re positioned the nipple angle for the filter to cp3 hose to help the radius of the hose not to try and kink . this is were the extra 1ft of hose could have been better to let me make a big sweeping arc .

fired off good with 1 pump up and 1 re-pump of the plunger after stall out . but no leaks and restarts fine after sitting .

so the next few days will see how she does driving .

well today i had to make 3 runs to that city were the hills up/down get it to act up . . . . .

:flipoff1: i am done with it . the boss can send it out to have it fixed . i am no diesel tech and i dont have a 15k dollar scanner to run the tests it needs .

I would almost bet money it’s the injectors returning too much fuel. But there are a few things to check before jumping to that conclusion, and that requires a good scanner and some special tools. I’d take it to someone that works on these engines regularly

well the other day driving down the highway no loss of power or codes in the engine ecm i got the reduced power light in the dash and the ding ding ding chime 3x on my trip .

then the other night i had a 05 f150 crew cab on and every little hill it was tossing the 0087 code and going limp mode .

my buddy said he might have time for a ride along with his snap-on BIG scanner here real soon .
