i know i am way off topic here, but i am thinking about getting one for a DD,anybody have first hand experiace with these cars, also looking at a 2006 pontiac grand prix with the 3800 n/a engine, i seem to be leaning towards the vw,the wife leans toward the GP

I had an 08 jetta with the 2.5 inline 5. The motor itself seemed good but i only had 60k miles on it. Never any problems with the motor. Did have the ABS module go out which was a $1400 repair (under warranty) and the fans went out which was a $800 repair (under warranty.

They are good cars. Ive worked on tons when i was witking as a VW/Audi tech. The electric fans are a common failure part. The aftermarket ones are reasonably priced and it is a job you can do in your drive way with some basic tools. Other then that I really like the mk5 cars. Very few reoccurring problems and they are a solid performer.

are there any known issues with the automatic transmissions??

Not that I ever encountered. In some of the older mk4 (1999-2004) cars there some problems with the 1.8T trannys of the car was chipped and drive hard, otherwise they are as good as any
