No warning what-so-ever. Drove to the golf course, no problem. Left the golf course, shift into 2nd, grinding and vibration.:( Starts to howl about 2000rpms, didn't dare go any higher. 1st and 3rd are normal.

I wasn't really prepared, mentally or financially, to learn how to rebuild one yet.

Any thoughts? Cheaper to rebuild or just find another used one?

Any and all thoughts are appreciated!

What a way to end a vacation:doah:.

Check the fluid level. 2nd gear is normally used to start off for normal driving. This guess might be a stretch but check the shift handle ( below the boot ) where it plugs into the transmission. I suggest you remove the boot and have a good mechanic pop out the shifter. The end could be boogered up causing the 3 - 4 shift rail to move ( a little ) this could be the grinding noise you hear when you are in 2nd gear. If the mechanic agrees that the shifter is worn out get another from a junk yard. The usual problem with this thansmission ( after 200K - 300K miles ) is poping out of gear ( usually 3rd gear ). The SM 465 is a very stout transmission.

My 2nd and 3rd are assumed with L being Low, then 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The shifter end appears to be fine. All the gears feel like they "engage" properly, just 2nd gives the grinding, vibration, and howling.

I'm draining the tranny now, the level was perfect. Tomorrow, when I have more ambition, I will pull the PTO covers, and look inside. I don't know what I'm looking for, so I hope any problem will just jump out at me.

Thanks for the reply and info:D!

I know a guy that does reasonably price work in northern NJ as a heads up.

Btw sounds like you have the age old toasted snap ring that also causes 3rd gear to pop.

So far I haven't had any problems stay in, or shifting into 3rd. Or would that be what I call 2nd, with L being first. That sh!t confuses me. Again, my shifter is labeled L,1,2,3. Or would that be what you are calling 1,2,3,4?

Thanks though. I think I'm gonna end up looking for a tranny/tcase combo. Mine is the figure 8 pattern with the 10 spline coupler. My understanding is that it is not the combo most people look for.

Ok yes the stock knob is L-1-2-3-r but most people will reference it as 1-2-3-4-r since theres technically 4 gears and its a 4 speed. Long and the short is if anyone is ever talking about popping out of gear its the 3rd physical forward gear on the trans.

Check the coupling sleeve for the gear that is having the problems. It may be cracked, thus spreading open and allowing the main shaft gear to jump a sleeve tooth or two under acceleration, which is causing the vibration.

I got a "new" 465 today. It is bolted to the adapter and t-case. Tomorrow, after work, I will hopefully get it all back in the truck. There is a mud run, trail ride Sat. that I want to go to. It means I will be working in my gravel driveway, in the rain. Yahoo!!!:eek1: But it will be worth it. I'm jonesing to drive my toy. It's been 2 whole weeks with no transportation. Just a one ton Chevy van.:(

This is a tranny that has been rebuilt less than 500 miles ago. It's been sitting full of gear oil for about 6 years. I had the opportunity to buy it and a 205 (rebuilt) back then, but had no cash. Still no cash, but my buddy is willing to wait a week or two. Lucky me:D

A new pimple on the a$$ of progress...the adapter has a hairline crack around the tranny mount side of things. The crack is all the way through to the inside of where the collar fits over the splined shafts.

Didn't find the crack till I had it under the truck balancing on my jack.

This just sucks, no playtime tomorrow. No transportation either.

Waahh, waahh:(

Take it to a welding shop and have it properly, professionally welded. My adapter was cracked on the cover below the output shaft and had been previously stick welded with the correct rod/process for cast.
