I have a 2wd 700r4 I want to put a tcase behind. Can I just shorten the output shaft or do the splines not go back far enough?

they don't go back far enough
Just swap the output shaft. A good tranny builder can do it in 30 minutes. I had the output shaft removed from a dead 4WD trans and installed into good 2WD trans. I helped and watched and was amazed at how easy it was. We finished up both in less than an hour and that included some time to look for some gaskets and plenty of chatting.
