I have a 1990 suburban with 1ton axles and x-over steering and a 1973 blazer i am swapping the 1Tons to. I have swapped the Axles over and noticed my brake lined didn't match up to the calipers but that is easy enough to fix. My question is if I will be able to swap the 1990 steering box to my 1973 blazer? Will it bolt right up and match up with the hoses from the pumps and if not what is the easiest/cheapest way to complete this swap. My funds are extremely limited because I just recently moved and hav to get my truck running and out of my Bros place because he is planning on moving shortly also. Thanks for any advise you may have. :doah:

The box will bolt onto the frame, but the lines will be different. I Think they changed around 1980.

If you have the power steering pump off the 90 you could use that, along with those lines. Or you could have custom one made. The local Napa does it for a decent price around here.

or you can unscrew the fitting in the back of the pump and switch them, your 73 should have flares, and the 90 should have o-rings.

or you can just swap the sector shafts from each box and not have to change lines or pumps.

After my last outting to the junk yard and seeing the diffs between varouis sector shafts I am beginning to question the whole swap sector shaft deal. Unless the gear teeth look exactly a like I would 'steer' clear of just grabbing a sector and swappin it in. There seems to be several styles and turn ratios out there. I have a print out of the various boxes, their years, number of turns and flared/o ring fittings. Some boxes were 16:1 and some were 17.xx:1. Some were 3.5 turns and some were 3.33 - 3.5 turns and the older constant ratio boxes were 4.5 turns. The sectors may look REAL close but may be different enough to possibly make a dif. Correctly adjusting the end play and teeth mesh is another concern with swapping a shaft. My 2 cents.

i just swapped the second one i've done the other nite. never heard of there being different ratio's. maybe we can get a part # check on the sector sahfts from a GM book?

I got the print out 'm refering to from somewhere on here. If it doesn't show up over the weekend I'll haev to bring it in and scan it. It's a little dirty though.

Lets see that sheet i've been searching on here for long enough for a sector shaft comparison chart. thanks

just get a 2wd shaft and put it in your 4wd box. as long as the 2wd sector shaft is from 73-87.
