2wd Steering Box ?good or bad?

Alright so I cruised over to my local pick n pull the other day looking for a 2wd steering box for a little crossover swap. I found 2 or 3 possible candidates for my swap and as I start to wrench on the most promising looking one I figure how the hell do I know if the thing is going to work or not???? So here’s my question……..

Is there a way to “tell” if a steering box is good or trash before hooking it up??

Honestly you can turn the wheel and feel for play but unless it leaks its probably good.

If you have a good 4WD box on your truck now, just pull the sector shaft and swap it. Just unbolt the 4 bolts on the top of the steering box and pull the sector shaft and cover off. Make sure the steering wheel is pointed straight ahead.
