I planning on putting a doubler box in front of a Chevy 32-splined NP205.

But I also have a Ford 31-splined NP205...
I think I've heard somewhere that the Fords input shaft is stronger.
So I'm thinking of swapping input shafts between the boxes...

But is the difference worth it?

The 32 spline shaft is bigger/stronger, but only by a few percent. They are very close in size, but the 32 is a touch bigger.

Minimum diameter of the shaft is the determining factor when it comes to breaking strength. The 32 spline is 0.020" bigger diameter than the 31.
The average human hair is about 0.003".
31 spline NP205s are much more common than the short 32. In my experience, 31 spline is easier to find and 1/3 of the cost of short 32.

IIRC...the bonus of the ford box is the front output shaft is a 32 spline shaft that allows the use of a 1410 yoke on the front. You can swap the output shaft into the chevy box though....
I dont know if any chevy boxes ever came factory with a 32 spline front.:dunno:

This^^^ Take the front output from your ford 205 and put it into the chevy 205

It looks like I have the long 32 spline input, so I' guess I'll have to gut the Ford-case anyway, so I might as well take the front output from it as well...

BTW, how much does a used short Chevy 32 spline input, or a Ford 31 spline input usually cost?
(In case I should sell the Ford box instead to fund the doubler...)

Right now tbere are several on ebay. 31s starting at $40, short 32s starting at $135.
Long 32s are about same cost as short.

You will be $ ahead if you swap it all into the chevy case and ebay the rest.
I can part out a good ford 205 for 3x what I can sell it whole.

Check with ORD ...they got my 32 spline short input when I installed my doubler...wont say how much here, but it was a decent price...
