Which is the correct way to position the seal on the tranny/t-case side?

I know the pics show the seals on the t-case side but the adaptor at hand here is the earlier one with the roller bearing on one side.

I would put my money on pic2. It always seems when installing a seal the flat closed side faces out. So the open side can give when pressed in? And the closed/flat side gives you something to press against.

spring on seal lip you see goes to oil/grease side is how I was always told .

and if deep recess for the seal some guys put 2 seals in them on the adaptors . better chance of keeping the fluid were it needs to be .
