Ok the 87 V10 350 TBI lost a rod. I have decided to upgrade to a 99 350 vortec out of a suburban. I got the complete wiring harness, computer, and accessories and the motor was just rebuilt. Here is what I’m worried about.

  • The computer being reprogrammed to remove the VATs, fuel tank pressure sensor and the auto tranny since I’m sticking with the 700R4. Does anybody know someone in the Denver area that can perform this? Or would I be better off getting a 96 computer for a manual?

  • The 87 is equipped with a manual VSS which I think is a 2000 pulse. What Pulse is the Vortec? Will a manual TPI 4000 VSS from a 700R4 work or will I need something different?

  • The Vortec only has 1 provision for a TV cable which goes to the Cruise control box. Is there another way of adding a bracket so I can run the Kick down for the 700R4 and the cruise control?

The computer says Serv. NO. 16263494

Ok, I was hoping maybe you might have scored an '0411 computer.

I have a couple options.

1. Upgrade to the '0411 computer. Not the least expensive option, but I seem to remember the option of an affordable VSS for the '0411 and 700R4. I'll post the '0411 VSS information later. The real downside to computer 16263494 is software. The '0411 is very popular, and has been hacked / reverse engineered to make the Vortec conversion affordable and gain some performance!

2 Maybe get a Vortec wiring harness from http://www.hotrodlane.cc/Instructions/WIRING/vortecv8harness.pdf I'm thinking they have a VSS available.

3. Use a Vortec to TBI intake manifold http://www.jegs.com/i/GM Performance/809/12496821/10002/-1?CT=999, and use the old ECM and the truck wiring as is. Maybe sell the 16263494 computer and wiring harness Vortec parts you have to offset the cost of the Vortec to TBI intake manifold?

Here is an idea, how about using a 700R4 tail housing mounted VSS. Something similar to the one that Advance Adapters makes. http://www.atlas-tc.com/pdf/50/50-5042.pdf I think all that is required is a 40 pulses per drive shaft revolution VSS. A tone ring mounted on the 700R4 U-Joint yoke and a custom bracket to hold the sensor and that's it.

I would rather use the vortec injection for the swap. I have had problems with the TBI set up and would like to get rid of it. I was looking at the VSS's on hot rod lane and I didn't know what pulse the vortec used.

I think some of the aftermarket VSS retailers for the newer GM's call it 128,000 pulses per mile, some call it 40 pulses per drive shaft revolution. To best of my knowledge of aftermarket VSS's, there is not a speedometer cable VSS that will do 128,000 pulses per mile or the 40 pulses per drive shaft revolution.

Hot Rod Lane can re-flash the PCM you have for about $125, and can figure out a VSS for the PCM you have. I think Hot Rod Lane will flash your PCM as a manual transmission. Hot Rod Lane sells a wiring harness for the PCM you have for about $750.

you are 4wd right? If you are 4wd then you need to not worry about vss in the trans because it is in the transfercase.

The VSS does send 40 pluses per mile, the 128000 pluse per mile is the signal used by some of the systems like ABS speedo etc. The total pluses per mile is a function of gears and tires, so it is different between trucks

If you convert your transfer case to VSS you can get a gague cluster from a 90-91 and it does not need a cable input, its one less thing to get caught on stuff offroad

Is there a way to retrofit the TV cable onto the vortec throtle body?

Why not go with the 4L60E?

The 350 vortec I got didn't come with a 4l60E. I know it would be simpler to use the 4L60E since it will bolt to the NP208 in the truck and would use the computer controls. The issue is I had just installed a TCI 700R4 truck master tranny/ TQ conveter ($1800 bucks) in the truck 300 miles before the motor went. I was going to get a Lokar universal TV cable and use it only as a kick down cable since TCI came out with a constant pressure valve body, so I don't have to have the TV cable adjusted for the pressure, just the throttle position.

In your suggestion for the VSS. I would I need to get a NP241 out of a blazer/sub to get the VSS set up. Or could I get a reluctor ring out of a 241 and place it on the output shaft like the speedo gear in the 208 and use the mounting port for 241 for the VSS. Does the 241 have the circle port for the speedo in the housing like the 208? In that instance I would have to have the computer reprogrammed to get the speedo signal corrected, right?

So I got a gauge cluster and a np241 with the 40 pulse VSS out of a 90 burb this week. I think that I just read that I will have to get a DRAC to convert the signal of the VSS from the computer to the speedometer down to the 2000 pulse to get it to read correctly. It that right?
