No need for a mag base or dial...unless you yank the carrier out without marking the adjuster collars. The easy way is to unbolt the keepers, scribe a line across the collar and housing for reference, then back one collar off two turns so the scribed line is visible again. The carrier should pretty much drop into your lap (or the floor, so a piece of plywood under the diff is a good idea)
Put the carrier in a vise while not molesting the bearings, unbolt the ring gear and split the carrier in half. Once the carrier is split you remove the spider gears, the 4 pin cross shaft and all the washers...then drop in the detroit (or lock-right). re-assemble the carrier, drop the ring gear on, put a dab of loc-tite on the ring gear bolts and crank em down with a torque wrench.
Slap the carrier back in the housing, and turn the adjuster you moved in two turns until the scribe lines match up and bolt up the keepers. Shafts, cover and fill with gear lube and yer done...
If you can fog a mirror you can install a Detroit, Lock-Right or welded gear ball in a 14 FF without special tools and in an easy 3 hours or less. There are no shims to mess with, and if you mark the adjusters there is nothing to reset or check.
