Hey I know this has been covered and have read some of the posts, but it seems I see more opinion than fact. I just bought an 84 1 ton and want to put a 4" lift on it. The rear has custom springs for towing (PO added for cab over and trailer). Im trying to decide between 4" blocks (which I already own) or a shackle flip. Im trying to keep by expense down so I can finish my blazer and the truck asap.

Are blocks unsafe to tow with? Shackle flip? Ill be towing about 8000 lbs max.

4" lift 3500 4x4, rear blocks, many trips, handles great, largest trailer was a 16' flat trailer with sand rail and gear, not much weight on that extended hitch

Does it have those helwig overload springs? If so, I'd keep those and do a block. I don't think a 4" is too bad for light to med towing with a long bed. My opinion...

Don't some trucks come factory with blocks? :dunno:

My dodge had a 5" block in the rear from the factory. I towed a 9k equipment trailer with no problems for a couple years.

I would worry more about trailer brakes, proper load range tires and Proper loading of the trailer.

I tow with 6" lift on my blazer. 56" rears straight from a 3/4 ton burb with shackle flip & ez-inch. A 16x7' fb trailer with four quads is the norm & no issues at all.

Yes it has the large helwig springs and custom built packs for towing/cabover camper. That is why I didn't want to use new springs for the lift. So im trying to figure out whether blocks or shackle flip would be best.

i would probably run a block. why?

the shackle flip changes the rear spring angles significantly. so any mounts you have for the top overloads would have to be repositioned to work properly and your pinion angle will be way diffferent (needing correction), it also moves the axle forward in the wheel well alot. this could be a problem asthetically.

that being said. i have blocks under my burb, and im going to throw my shackle flip on there after i make a few trips with the trailer, to see which one i like better. i know the ride will be better with the flip, but im curious about first hand experience while towing.

The shackle flip is the problem solver. Perches don't have to be moved as long as you use high quality STEEL bolt-in shims, like from diy4x, to correct pinion angle. Blocks suck. A shackle flip with an ezinch, shims, & 4" shackle should fix you right up.
