Wondering where to look for an ID number on a 400.... Allready found the casting number but all that does is give me a range in years. The VIN stamp on the front pass. side is gone cause I think its been decked. Anywhere else this info might be? All I want to know is what year exactly it is...

    Thanks, Sam

if it was a car block there will be a casting date in the back, like " A 7 72" as in January, 7th 1972.
That front code is the only sure way to tell though on the year on a truck.
Maybe the head stampings will narrow the year down.

I did see one on the back like that... " J17 75" Thought that might of been it. I'm guessing all 400's are the same parts wise. just was curious. Will check heads when I put nice pretty chrome valve covers on after its painted. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
