454 or 500 cadde ???????

comparing two stock motors that are 30 years old, and calling one a winner because of intake valve size is really really narrow sighted.. borderline idiotic, when talking engines. That is one factor on a huge list of factors to compare. anyways I will build a 468 or 502 and put it against your caddy any day and burn you through the traps and still have money left in my pocket for gas. I dont think you could build a streetable cad that would compare to a GM ZZ502 to begin with.. lets work the 502 a bit and you're out of the contest, the 502 (even a 454) will snap axleshafts if you can find a way to plant the tires.

as for the "everyone has a chevy" thing, go buy a ford and be different! :/

Wrong again Mike my brother and I have built a motor that will kick a ZZ502 ass and yes it is streetable. Here is the car that it is in http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=977248&a=7210221&f=0. It has ran a 11.76ET in Denver with 116mph trap speed. The car weighs in at 3700lbs fully loaded. Infact his old next door neighbor has a Chevelle with a zz502 in it and it ran only 13.00ET. So I can say I have seen those engines run and I am not at all impressed. Oh yah there is a guy in Denver that had a 537 which was a 502 with a stroker in it. This truck had Brodix Aluminum heads and a Vortex blower on it with a Arizona Speed and Marine fuel injection on it. The truck weighed 7000lbs and it only ran 15.00ET in Denver. Next year Mike I will have a 500 caddy in my truck and I will take you on anyday. I will let you know when it is really. By the way the intake valve size has a hell of a lot more to do with it than you think. The heads will have a greater velocity which means I can pack more air into my cylinders than you and your big block. My engine will live alot longer because I will only have to shift at 5000rpms where your big block will shift at 6000rpms to make the same power. I am not narrow sighted because I have played with the big block engine and the small blocks and well that are not that great. One more thing look at the new LS1 engine and the design is just like the Caddy engine. Take a look. some time.

My firebird has a pontiac 350 in it and it runs 11.15 at 121 mph. The car is 3551 with me in it. My "small" block can keep up with big blocks. I shift at 5600 rpms. Pontiacs have always been known for bottom end torque. Even the samll ones. Just an idea though.

I agree POWERMAD!! I would have said something back to knowitall, but I think I have caused enough problems before, so, thanks for making that reply back to him!

I'd like to see a list of bore and strokes for each engine, I think that has alot to due with the "personality" of an engine. Rod lengths too, if anyone has 'em.

Go-ahead and lite 'em up Wes! -I'm just kidding, I'd like to see this stay on topic, pretty cool so far...

350- 3.876 bore/ 3.75 stroke
400- 4.121 bore/ 3.75 stroke
455- 4.152 bore/ 4.21 stroke

Chevy motors
350- 4.000 bore/ 3.48 stroke 5.7 rods
400- 4.125 bore/ 3.75 stroke 6.0 rods
454- 4.251 bore/ 4.00 stroke 6.135 rods
Not sure on the Caddy though

Donovan, your response to Mike was fine, POWERMAD was referring to the post previous to your which was more of a personal attack than anything informative.

I for one appreciate your knowledge on the caddy motors...

I'm sure Ron wasn't calling you a knowitall, he was responding to the user "knowitall" that posted just before you did.

I'm sorry, but this guy's ZZ502 must be puked or he can't drive for sh!#. Why don't you compare it to my 454 in my 6100 lb truck with a 4-speed and 35's?

Everyone can argue all day on this sunject, it has been argued before. I wouldn't stick a 500 cad in anything unless a built one fell into my lap. Not because of their design, but all the custom stuff that it requires.

And if that guy with the 537/efi/vortec ever wants to sell his junk, give him my e-mail addy. ZZ502's aren't the answer to everything, either. A 454 with AL intake, decent cam, and headers will make 500 lbs-ft of tq, no problem.

Realsquash have you ran your truck in the 1/4 mile yet? I thought that guys truck should have kicka$$ but it should have ran better than that. I did see his truck in person and it did have all of that some on it. It could be the cam or the heads where to big I don't know why. As for custom stuff on a caddy there is nothing that would be custom in the engine expect maybe running 440 chrysler rods. I would even reuse the stock rocker arms.

Well I couldn't leave you with the impression that someone here thought you were a "knowitall"...

I can see benifits of both the big blocks and the Caddy's...both can make extreme torque. My 350 is still doing alright, but when it gets tired I'll be looking at more cubes. I may go with a Poncho 400 or 455, a Caddy 472 or 500, or a Big block Chev. So I really like to see all the info that I can. That includes your info on Cady's, Squash's info on BBC , and Duelers info on Poncho's. Its all good!

The only thing I'm sorta hung on is the adaptor...I run a SM 465 so I can't just run out and get a BOP TH 350 or 400. If the adaptor isn't too spendy I'd like to do it!

Donnovan, I could totaly see how that could have been miss read. -still funny though!

Hay, thanks for the bore and stroke info. I like what I see so far. Looks like those Olds/Pontiac (same i guess?) and Caddys run a alot more stroke than Chevy engines- perfect for low-end torque. 6"+ rods, WOW!

I still think parts avalibility would be an over-rideing factor (for me anyway) Its a shame there aren't more of those engines around.
