Hello to all,
Here is my issue:
I purchased a 1989 Suburban 2500 with a 454 TBI in it to transplant into my 1988 Chevrolet V30. (Someone pulled the TBI motor out and put some carbed motor in its place)
While I had the motor out I figured I would do some preventative maintenance to it, I replaced:
the oil pan gasket
oil pump/ pickup
rear main seal
valve cover seals
pvc valve and grommet
plugs and wires
distributer cap and button
harmonic balancer
o2 sensor
water pump
power steering pump
trans rebuild
trans cooler lines
resealed the transfer case
replaced the u joints

I removed:
the AIR system (I sourced new manifolds to replace the ones I had that had the holes in them because of the AIR system.)

I have since reinstalled the motor and tried to crank it up:
All I seam to get is a bunch of backfiring through the TBI and through the exhaust. Let me also say that there is NO exhaust installed, just manifolds and that is it. (The exhaust that was on there was some hack job, I am getting all new exhaust.)

I know someone is going to ask me to check the timing but I can't get the vehicle to run yet, so I cant check the timing.

It looks as though there is a good spray coming from the injectors.

I am 98% sure the plug wires are correctly installed. (Could someone provide me a good accurate diagram so I will KNOW they are correct?)

If any one else has any other ideas I am open to it.

Thanks,

Charles.

Yea I watched those videos. I am thinking you are right about the timing.

Tell me what you think about this though:

I never removed the distributer, I just removed the cap and button.

I will check the wires again though just to be sure.

Thanks,

Charles.

find TDC on #1.. make sure it's laced from that tower.. no matter where it's pointing...

GOOD NEWS:

No its not fixed yet but I will be able to definitively rule out the timing tomorrow. When I removed the old distributor I did not remove the old wires and I labeled them.

I not going to be able to sleep tonight. WHY are the days not longer!!

how the old cap is laced, and where from, has no relation to where a new dizzy install may be... where the rotor is pointing at TDC does...

the genuis's on Fast and Furious learned that on that one build that wouldn't run after replacing wires..

Well............................... Plug wires were WAAAAAAYYYYYY off.

Truck runs good now.

Thanks for the help.

Charles.

Well that was easy! :waytogo:

With the AIR system removed it will set a CEL, if you program the AIR out this can be fixed. But more importantly the system will stay in Closed Loop all the time. Every time the AIR is enabled the system goes Open Loop.

Since I did remove the AIR system how do I "program the AIR out"?

Will I have to send my ECM off to be done or will I have to replace the PROM?

Thanks,
Charles.

Just need to know the BCC = four letter code on ECM and a new chip can be mailed to replace it.
