Are there any advantages to taking a 454 Vortec and using a different intake to use a TBI set up?

I have read where some have taken the vortec engine and turned it into a TBI set up. Is this better than leaving it as a vortec motor?

Does it take away from the hp or torque?

If you can go from vortec to tbi would this allow you to use your current tbi wiring?

Can you use a 4l80E transmission with tbi?

I know, lots of questions. But there's no better place to ask! So please, educate me on this.

Why mess with it, run it as is

Sorry, you must stay after class.

If it can be run with a TBI set up, is that better than running it as is?

I have read articles about some builders taking a 350 vortec and putting on a tbi intake.

I am not changing mine from the vortec set up. I already have the lifters and gaskets. The new oil pump and timing chain are on their way. I may put in a different cam.

I was just curious as to why they changed it from the vortec set up.

Same reason guys pull LS intakes off to run a Holley, they don't understand the fuel injection and think they can get some extra power.
If the injection is correct, the Vortec will work better

Thanks for the input. I am very happy to have this 454 Vortec. I can't wait to get my hands dirty and get it up and running.

For the last 5 weekends me and my son have been tearing into his 1999 S10 Blazer with a 4.3 Vortec w/218,000 miles. It was leaking oil in many places. We had to pull the motor to clean it up and replace all the gaskets. It's hard to get it done in a quick time because of the aches and pains we both endure. But we are getting closer to getting it leak free.

Once we're finished then I get to replace the lifters and top end gaskets on the 454 Vortec, w/172,000 miles, in the 1999 Dually I just bought.

After that, I can tear into the other 454 Vortec w/81,000 miles and get it ready for my 87 K5. Once that is done then it's on to the cage, new tie rod and ends, and hydraulic assist. Maybe some bodywork.

Hopefully I can get this all done before BB17. It will be an awesome Blazer when finished. Well, at least I think so. We'll see. BB17 is coming up fast.

And I'm not getting any younger. Which sucks. :screwy:

Can't say I have ever seen anybody take a factory Vortec-engined truck and convert it over to TBI, nor do I really see any advantage to do that. However I do know that at least on the 350 side of things it's fairly common for people to either pull a Vortec 350 engine from the junkyard or get a Vortec crate engine and then convert it over to whatever the truck was factory, such as TBI or carb, and drop it in. If you have a truck already setup with TBI or carb it's pretty easy to adapt a Vortec engine over to that setup and bolt it in, with the advantage of the Vortec having much better power as compared to a factory 350 TBI engine. Most people are claiming around a 50 hp gain between simply replacing the factory TBI with a factory Vortec, obviously with the Vortec swapped over to TBI. A co-worker did this years ago on an early-90's Chevy truck and there was a very noticeable performance increase.
