can you redrill the face of the adapeter to use the stock 208 on the 203 range box?u would need to do this to keep from changing the long output shaft in the trans to a short one.

Yes, you can use the 465/208 adapter against the face of the 203. You're right you will need to redrill the face and also plug the unused holes.
But you redrill the 203, not the adaptor.
