496ci Exhaust Headers

I thought real hard about running the ebay headers but decided against it considering how the truck is going to be used. I was just having a hard time choking down the cost of the Sanderson headers but I also learned the hard way on past projects you get what you pay for when it comes to headers.

That is a hard lesson to learn, but an important one you get what you pay for. That is why i hope my wife doesn't figure out how much this build really costs. Lol. Kinda like my gun collection

Word. I just give her a general idea... haha

My buddy has a 496 pushing somewhere over 500 hp in his '79 K20 and his engine builder spec'd it with 2 1/8" primary Hedman long tube headers. Ceramic coated of course. Make sure to get some with the thickest flange possible to prevent leaks. His have a 3/8" flange. He had to clearance the frame about 1/2" on the top flange to clear them.

That's about what I had to do for the Sanderson headers even tho they are 1-7/8" primaries. I still think it might have some to do with my bastardized engine mounts.

It is a Mark IV, bored and stroked to a 496. Running a 10.5:1 CR. I put Iron Eagle 308 heads on it, a Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, and Holley 870 Street Avenger for a carb. The heads and intake have been ported and polished. I should call this motor my rabbit hole, because i keep falling farther and farther with no real end in site. Good thing my wife thinks it is costing me what i originally thought it would. lol

I found myself cruising through this thread again and realized you didn't mention the cam, specs? If it's a secret, I won't tell a sole. :D

The more I think about this, are you sure you won't be held back by a shorty header as opposed to a long tube that would breath better? Running big single exhaust, right?

The cam is a hydraulic roller, designed for a "fair" idle and a power band from 1800-5400 rpm with a 108 centerline and a .050 duration of 225/231. I would include a picture of the cam card, but i cant figure out how to attach images. I am planning on installing a single 3 1/2" exhaust. I really hope all that i have read is right, because i have already ordered the shorty headers and they will be here on Tuesday. I have take the following week off to install the engine, transmission, transfer case, and driveshaft. I am certain there will be unexpected surprises along the way, but that should give me enough time to get all that work done and adjusted/tuned. I haven't made an appointment yet with the dyno, but i will let you know what numbers i am pulling once do.

I actually bought a jegs pair of long tube headers. Spent a few hours stripping them and coated them myself. No leaks, perfect fit on 468 bbc around 500+ hp. Built exhaust myself, 3" cutouts and xpipe with duals out the back.
The jegs headers to my surprise are very good quality.
