I'm pretty well convinced that I'm going to swap in an automatic this winter so I'm trying to decide which one I should go for 60 or 80.

When I compare the gearing between the 2 the 60 has a lower first gear (3.06 vs 2.48) and a better overdrive (.70 vs .75).

The 4l80 is also about 7" longer than the 60.

By my math, in every respect other than strength the 60 beats the 80 easily. Am I wrong? :dunno:

It seems like unless I'm building a massive horsepower motor the 60 is easily the way to go.

You are correct, if you don't need the brute strength of the 80 the 60 is lighter and has better gearing.

Yup. 60 is a great light duty dual purpose trans. Great first gear for off road. Deep overdrive for highway cruising.

I would pick the 4l60 in your case

cool, thanks guys. It's cheaper too, so another bonus!

The 60 is basically a modern 700r4 so it's got the bugs worked out and is a pretty good transmission.

The 80 is just a worked over TH400 with overdrive and now a bunch of electronics to control it.
