Guy I work for has 2000 Chev 2500 6.0 with a 4l80e for a farm work truck. We are thinking the 4l80 is on its way out.
Has no reverse.
Has also has a 2002 Chev 1500 5.3 4l60e sitting with a blown front differential, the trans is rebuilt with upgrades, both trucks are 4x4 dash switch 4x4.

Will the 4l60 out of the half ton work in the three quarter ton?

No, t case won't match up a 4l60 is 27 spline. The 4l80 is 32 spline, pcm is not segment swapped and the transmission plug is not pinned correctly and the truck is too heavy for a 4l60, rebuild the 80.

Perfect thanks I just had an idea, to save some money for him and give me more work. Lol!

I was thinking of using the tcase from the 1500 along with the 4l60 but if the electrics don’t work so be it.

Was talking to him today and he was quoted 3500 for a rebuild.
The trucks ok but I don’t know about spending that on it.

Canadian pricing… Eh!

That’s why I was spitballing. Plus’s I’m a cheap Fock!
Not my money but I don’t like the 6.0 that’s in it and don’t think it’s worth it.
But then again the prices on used truck are still high… so. His choice.

Well Ben when I thought about the swap I it was because of you! No kidding!

Babaganuked! :saweet:
Haha not sure if that is a good thing or not. What’s the truck used for? Can he afford for it to be down? Maybe slap some steels and clutches in it and be done?

Yeah the only truck is just a fuel truck parts getter run around type deal not really used until May till the end of harvest.

Although the sheet metal is the same, it's surprising how little of the drivetrain interchanges between the 1500 and 2500. You could probably swap both the transmission and transfer case, but the 4L60 is 3 inches shorter, so you'd want to take the driveshafts as well. I don't know if there are conversion U-joints available. The two transmissions use the same connector (at least during certain years), but the pinout is different, so you'd have to re-pin the connector (maybe somebody makes an adapter?). Then you need HPTuners and $100 in credits to segment swap the trucks original file with the 4L60 segment from some other vehicle (ideally the donor), but that source is probably readily available on the HPTuners site. You'd have to research transmission cooler lines. Are they the same diameter such that you can take those from the donor as well? (I'm assuming the connection points are different). You could probably cut both sets, flare the ends and interconnect with rubber hose, but this is getting messy.

It sounds like the easiest fix is to rebuild or source a front differential for the 1500. That shouldn't be too bad. You can't swap the differentials between them, even if they're the same ratio because the halfshafts have a different bolt pattern. The mounting may be different as well. Then maybe keep an eye out for a good used 4L80.

Dean, did that price include R&R of the trans? Usually much cheaper if you can take it to them on the bench.

You can buy a reman 4l80e for 2-3k + core.
$3500 for a bench rebuild is highway robbery so I would hope they are pulling it and replacing it for that cost.

Reverse sero band rod to short.
If you are just trying band aid a $500 work truck. Little more work than a trans service.

I asked that was R+R

Oh might need to look in to that!

Funny things going on with it.
Boss said it would not go in reverse.
I was Playing with it today for the first time.
No reverse but I also had no park or neutral it wanted to go forward in any gear selected!?

Shifter cable going bad ?

Shifter cable going bad ?
That’s what I was thinking.
When it started his kid was driving it then it got to -40c and covered in snow. It’s been in the shop for two days thawing out. I’ve been away for the last two weeks because of the cold and no real jobs there to do.

Might be that it’s done but I want to make sure it’s not something simple like the cable.
