4x4 is not working.. Transfer case

Do you happen to have picture of what the module looks like? The one behind the headlight switch?
The only things behind the headlight switch is the back of the fuse panel, a harness connector and a grey peice that is wired into the harness that has a little door that opens with a little circuit board in it that is removeable (no idea what it is).

It finally works. Put in a used TCCM, new transfer case motor and dash switch and it finally works.:waytogo:

I really wish it would have been easier and cheaper than that, I am sorry. Glad you got it fixed though.

It's all good. I expected the worst case. It was deffinately not a worst case. The radio worked perfect untill I messed with the svc (speed volume control) on the radio then it died for about 30 mins.

So everything seemed to be working okay with my 4x4 untill I tried using it yesterday. Everything seems to be working okay, you can hear the transfer case motor go into 4x4, but it doesn't work.
I had a friend check it out for me today while I was at work and he said that the front end locks in, but the front drive shaft does not spin. He said it was probably either the chain or one of the shift forks in the transfer case.
When you are driving down the road and hit the 4x4 button the light switches on and you can hear/feel the transfer case work. Then you can hear and feel a slight grinding which feels like it is coming from the front.

I had the same issue in my 96 s10 blazer and it ended up being the transfer case switch on top of the tcase. Could it be the same issue? The s10 is vacuum and the suburban is electric right?

Thanks for the help.

sounds like the axle disconnect is not engaging.thats the problem with mine right now.i have the floor shift and its not actuating the disconnect to lock in the 4 wheel drive.its also electric so yet anether thing to fugure out.

Is the axle disconnect on the front axle or is it a switch on the transfer case?
its on the top passenger side of the differential.its a solenoid that pushes in a gear inside the diff to lock in 4 wheel drive.should have 12 volts going to it when you engage the 4 wheel drive.

If the front end is off the ground and the truck is in 2 wheel the front drive shaft will not spin when you spin the tire by hand. When the 4x4 is on the drive shaft will spin when you spin the tire. Does that mean that the axle disconnect is working fine and it is something with the transfer case? Or is it working just enough when I spin it by hand, but not enough when I am driving?

when it engages it lings the passenger side halfshaft inside to the ring gear on that side.it should spin freely when in 2 wheel and then lock up and not spin if the 4 wheel drive is engaged.sounds like the wiring is reversed somehow.that means it is engaging in 2 wheel drive but not driven by the transfer case, and then disengaging when you put it in 4 wheel.i dont know where the wires got crossed, but does it look like the wiring was messed with cut or spliced.ive heard some people bypass the switch by putin a 12 volt dash switch to engage it manually when you need 4x4.i may end up doing that to mine as well if it comes down to it.

With the front end in the air in 2 wheel drive you can spin the front wheels and the drive shaft will not spin. When you turn on the 4x4 and spin the front wheels the drive shaft will spin, but when driving it makes a noise like the front is not fully engaged and the 4x4 doesn't work.
Should the front shaft spin in 4x4 with the rear tires on the ground?
Or after you turn on the 4x4 does the front and the rear have to spin for it to lock the transfer case in?

OK, maybe this will help you understand what is supposed to happen.

When you are in 2wd, the axle is disconnected from the wheel, and the transfer case is disconnected from the driveshaft.

When you shift into 4wd, the axle is connected to the wheel, so the driveshaft should be hooked to the front wheels.
But, the transfer case should be hooked to the driveshaft also.

Thus, when the front end is off the ground and you are in 4wd, you should not be able to turn the wheel and have the driveshaft turn, since its hooked to the transfer case, and the transfer case has the front and rear shafts tied together.
Since the rear tires are still on the ground and won't let the rear shaft turn, then the front shaft cannot turn either.

If you have an open front end, turning the front wheel in 4wd with both front tires off the ground, will cause the other tire to turn in the opposite direction, but the shaft should not turn.

It sounds like the front axle disconnect is probably working fine, but the transfer case is not engaging the front driveshaft.

At this point, I must defer you to someone who knows your transfer case better than I.
I'm not sure what does the locking on that model.

Does the low range work?

Well the axle disconnect works properly. Turns out the transfer case had a leak and it turns out that transfer cases need fliud or they stop working :dunno:. I was planning on just getting one out of a junk yard, but haven't been able to find one yet. Can anyone recommend a good rebuild kit?

I owe you a big apology. I found what you might already know, Rockauto has bearing and seal kits, but are down to 1 remaining. I am assuming that it will need a clutch in it also which I don't see listed. I wish I was there to help with the work, could I help by purchasing the kit?

Dave. It's not your fault I didn't check all of the fluids. No apology needed unless you forgot to mention that it didn't have fluid in it. I drove it for a couple of hundred miles without checking. I shouldn't have done that. Hell my friend that put the new shift motor in the t case probably never checked the fluid.

I honestly don't remember checking it either. I never saw a much of a reason to suspect it was out of oil, but obviously I didn't check it! I probably drove it only 80-100 miles. Thank you for not holding it against me. Man do I feel stupid!

I never noticed it leaking so I just assumed it was fine. I should have checked it.

What are the chances of filling it up and it working properly? I assume the clutch pack is what burned up.
