DIFFERENTIAL MOUNTED 40-TOOTH RELUCTOR RING
The 40-tooth reluctor-ring shown above, bolts to the differential pinion flange. The reluctor ring is made of two halves,
so that it can be installed without removing the pinion flange.
The vehicle-speed-sensor (GM part # 1554752) is mounted to a bracket (prototype shown) that bolts to the differential
webbing. Two 1/4" holes (arrows) need to be drilled into the differential webbing to mount the bracket.
The VSS (GM part # 15547452) is used on the transfer cases of 1989 and newer S-10 4x4 trucks, AWD Astro Vans, and
1987 and newer full-size 4x4 trucks. This part is readily available at most wrecking yards.
Flexible twisted-pair wiring connects the VSS to the engine wiring harness.
The differential mounted reluctor-ring is a simple way to run a 40-tooth reluctor ring, and normally takes less than an
hour to install, using normal hand tools.
The complete differential-mounted reluctor-ring kit for a 7-1/2" or 7-5/8" rear-end is shown on the next page.
Another kit (Stealth Conversions part # 4L60-007), which uses a different, and more complex bracket to mount the
VSS to the differential should be available for the 8-1/2" and 8.6" rear-end used on full-size 1/2 ton trucks.

this is anice option to the the vss and retain your 7004r and t-case

For those who install a Turbo-350 transmissions (or other transmission with no reluctor ring) into 1989 and newer trucks, the differential mounted 40-tooth reluctor-ring kit is a simple solution to make the electric-speedometer, cruise-control, and anti-lock brakes work.

The complete installation of the differential-mounted 40-tooth reluctor-ring normally takes less than an hour

i dont see why you could not mount this off your t-case yoke. this set up is designed for 2wd's that have a slip yoke at the other end but the same concept will work off your t-case with a fixed yoke.

at 80 bucks..its kind of nice on the wallet too.

there is a vss on my tcase currently but its for tbi is there some kind of buffer out there to make it acceptable to an 02?

If you have the stock style VSS which is 40 teeth will plug right in, if it is an aftermarket one you can change the tune to compensate for it

i mean either way i go im still going to need the right vss for the computer. 4l60e or 700r4

They are the same VSS both 40 tooth. THe TBI uses a buffer to send the different systems there needed signals, where as the newer trucks take the raw signal into the PCM then that sends it out over a CAN network to the other systems in the truck.

So if you already have the correct VSS for TBI your all set as far as the VSS for a 4L60E

thats cool then, tell me jimmy which way would you go 4l60e or the 700r4

I would go with the 4L60E being that it is computer controlled and it is the same strength as the 700r4 just make sure to not completly take off torque mangment, personally though manuals kick ass with a 5.3

yea my car is manual, its nice to have something i just get in and go. for some reason i dont really like driving manual trucks.

Looks like the 5.3s are dang near a dime a dozen in your area as well!! The 6.0s aren't really any more so get the biggest you can afford!!

You'll need a pre 04 engine with a throttle cable to use your 700r4 TV cable. Connecting a TV cable on a drive by wire system would be difficult at best.

You'll need a flexplate and a spacer from a 6.0l w/4l80e. The torque converter holes will need to be reemed slightly for the bolt holes to line up.

The wiring is a little tricky so make sure you have a factory wiring diagram before you do any cutting.

Start checking around to find someone who can eliminate the antitheft and emission related codes from the PCM.

All in all if you do all the work yourself 2 grand is a fairly realistic goal.

have an '04 that has a factory cable operated TB.

If it was bolted to a 465 then it will have a 32 spline input and a 4l60 has a 27 spline output.
