Hey Guys,

I've got some kind of problem here...

as some of you might know or remember, I've two trucks,

one is a 6.2 diesel

one a 305 (in an 86 Jimmy)

my problem: the 305 jimmy was meant to be a donor rig for my k5, unfortunately :p:, the drivetrain is in really great condition. It would be the easiest way to remove the rusty body and put the fancy new painted k5 body on the drivetrain, connect the wiring and off we go....

unfortunately I somehow like the 6.2, and I do not know if I really should believe in the gas mileage of the 305 (I got about 17.5 mpg??!) Gas really is an issue over here in germany, the acutall pricing of one gallon is about 6,50 $/gallon (! no kidding). Diesel's about 4,5 $
I'm planning about driving the truck on the weekends or once and a while to work/in the holidays=> mileage/year is about 3500 - 4000 miles a year.

The problems of the 6.2:
several oil leaks ( i already got me a new pan/wiring& stuff)
unknown mileage (82 red block)
hacked wiring, messed up glow plug system (works because I changed it to manual)
the goodies: engine was very reliable (at least the 3000 miles I drove it), economical: I got 20-22 mpg/highway

what do you think? swap the body with the 305 drivetrain, rebuild the diesel (someday I'll put a turboed amg optimizer in it, I swear :D:D) and the rest of the drivetrain and put the cab on again...

well, hard decisions to be made these days

greetings

flo ;-)

btw.

the 6.2 needs a new oil pan, new front cover gaskets, rear main seal and vacuum pump seal, maybe the timing chain should be changed too...
as said, it runs quite good, no blue smoke, black smoke on steep grades & heavy right foot... ;-)

Seems to me like the 6.2L would be the good choice for you. Even with the necessary work it'll probably last you until you can get that Optimizer (probably the day before I get mine:wink1:) and get great gas mileage the whole time. Meanwhile the 305 will still get that okay mileage burning the higher priced gas up as it gets more and more expensive.

I say put the work into the 6.2L.

Definitely. J-code intake and non-EGR stuff is the way to go. Get that "free" extra 30hp or so.

I've had sooo many people go, "ewwww, a 6.2L diesel!" but not a single one of them has ever driven a low geared J code vehicle either.
Big Ugly doesn't exactly get up and scoot but I bet it's a lot quicker than a C code with 3.08 gears.

My non-EGR 6.2L with a turbo combined with 33s, 4.56 gears and an NV4500 makes for a diesel truck that leaves a TBI 350 / 700r4 in the dust

@russell:

yep, I heard about that and, once again, I really like the 6.2 Diesel, it is a great engine. The weight of the engine compared to the horsepower it puts out is really good (and not only compared to its competitors back in the 80s I think!!) A German off road magazine tested and compared a 6.2 diesel blazer with a daihatsu wildcat and a nissan patrol and a toyota landcruiser => they really were amazed by the performance, ride and build quality of the k5, and: in terms of fuel efficiency, the k5 was better than most of the other trucks, the crappy daihatsu engine almost needed 2 liters more for 100km. I once owned a nissan patrol with the 3.3l diesel engine (non-turboed), great engine nice truck, but there's hardly any difference to the blazer concerning the fuel consumption. But: the nissan is simply a Japanese knock-off of the k5, narrower, much shorter and lighter. I got around 22-24 miles per gallon, not bad, but the engine had only 95HP and the truck was about 600 lbs lighter!! (and no V8 sound of course ;-)

Stay with the 6.2. Better mileage, more torque, cheaper fuel. What's to think about.:wink1:
Oh, and they don't leak, they "mark" their territory.
