Here’s a different take on the 383 vs LS bs…

Think I was around 8 or 9 when my Dad bought this AMX. Was supposed to be my first car until an unfortunate steer racing “incident” when I was 15. Older mouthy kid in the neighborhood was always bragging about his dad’ bbc 70 Vette so 1 New Years Eve, we decided to see which was faster. Seemed like a great plan, both our folks were at the same party, main street through the neighborhood was empty (except for 1 LEO doing paperwork). We lined them up, launched, pulled the vette, then the cop pulled me over!!! Anyway, the officer was really pretty decent, no ticket, written warning…he just followed me home to make sure I got back safely. Thought I had won the lottery.

Officer was definitely smarter than me. Guessing he didn’t want to mess with the paperwork and all. He did just what he said he’d do. Only down side, he left his lights and siren on! Nosy neighbors where much more effective than any Judge could have been. Phone rang for days with them asking what happened.

Needless to say, next drove the car when I was almost 30ish…

Car has ~80k, original 360, t10, paint & interior. Decent driver. The PO had put in forged pistons and a small cam and a set of shitty header. I put a much healthier cam and did a lot of head work in 06 (yes, that’s a 96 inspection sticker from 06 in the pic). Drove it a bit and promptly chewed up the rear 4 rod bearings…

Thought about putting an LS/t56 combo in it. Cheap and cheerful compared to rebuilding the 360. Plus, decent pistons for an AMC are a bit pricey & 2 rods are shot. Enter in the Chevy stuff…

Offset grind the crank from 3.44” to 3.53”, add 6.0” GM 250 (yep, 250) rods and +0.030” sbc 400 pistons you end up with an affordable AMC 383.

We’ll see how this works out. If it doesn’t, a 360 core is about as valuable as a sbc 305.

The build will be slow, it’s snowballing quickly with all the “might as wells” while it’s apart. Plus what better place to post an AMC build, than a K5 forum?

Nice! Good story too! Lol!

buddy had a built 390/4spd AMX in high school, that thing was a blast

Cars are gay but I'm listening.
This thing is super clean and a bitchin color.
It's been sitting the whole time?

Damn that thing is clean! I love a short wheelbase car with a manual trans, so much fun.

I drove a really rusty (TX rust, not northern rust) 390/4sp car in high school. It's how I learned the importance of scatter shields. Still have it and a few others. (should post in the hoarding tread)

Kinda like just inserting the tip but you're not gay???
...most of the time it makes a nice shelf (your mirrors sat there for a week or so) & I try to start it every 9-10 years whether it needs it or not.

Well I know you are far but I have a 360 amc engine sitting in my garage.
It has about 30k on a rebuild but has been sitting for the past 7 years.
It ran great in my jeep.
I don't know if car and truck engines were different but it's for sale cheap since it's the only thing jeep I have left.
It also has a new starter and alternator

@imiceman44 depends on the year...if it has a 400th behind it, the trans is worth a few bucks. Heads are junk though.
Other than that, nothing special. AMC was a bit "thrifty" a 360 isn't worth much. Shipping would most likely be more than the engine is worth.
PM me and I'll send you my number.

I already sold the th400 and the QT.
I will pm you.

got a couple small things done recently. This seem is not coming together as quickly as I'd hoped.

Quick ratio PS box & most of the front suspension installed (just waiting on 2 bushings that should be here in 2 weeks, which is now going on 2 months)
IMG_3035.JPG IMG_3034.JPG

Cleaned up some old parts and starting to hoard new ones
IMG_3037.JPG
& a 70 390 followed me home too!!! It's a 1 year only motor and not all that common

The dominoes have started falling...who'd of thought re-pop parts for an obsolete car would be such a challenge???

Leaf spring / shackle bushings. Front leaf spring bushing ID id 0.75"over sized. Shackle bushings are the correct diameter but 4 of the 8 are 3/8" of an inch to short.
IMG_3083.JPG
Direct fit radiator & shroud...might fit something, just nothing I own (took over a 2 months to make it here)

Installed the Inline Tubes fuel lines and brake lines. Would have been quicker to start from scratch and could have gotten better quality bending them with a rock. Not worth a pic.

Figured out why the gas gauge was a bit iffy...

Still waiting on the front spring perch bushings to put the front end together. They where ordered in Feb and a week out. Ordered from 2 different places, both still just a week out. Found them on Amazon, 3 week delivery but in stock!!! Ordered Tuesday, attempted delivery yesterday. Have to pick up at the post office Monday. Progress.

This is where the good starts...piss on all the correct OEM date coded BS!

Fuel system got upgraded...RobbMC stuff. Pretty impressed so far. Think the days of starving for fuel are over.
IMG_3095.JPG IMG_3096.JPG
& the best part...got some new stainless steel headers from American Racing. To say they are works of art is an understatement. These are the same folks that dropped the hellcat into a prius. Great to deal with. They offer 2 AMC sets, 1 big car & 1 small. They guaranteed that the big car headers would fit the AMX/Javelin and thought that the small ones should too...so they sent a set of each!!!

I love AMCs! My Dad's hot rod when I was growing up was a 82 Spirit with a 360/904/9" in it. That little thing was running mid 8's in the 1/8th spinning to the 60' mark with stock intake and exhaust manifolds. Such a fun car. He sold it and bought a tractor before I got my license though.... :dunno:

We had two of the 401s as well as a set of 360 heads that had been built for round track racing. I wish I would have gotten to put one of those engines together and play with that thing.

Spent 6 hours banging out the old leaf spring bushings. 2 forking bushings!!! WTH??? Got to get an air chisel.

Good news, suspension is done. Mostly stockish. Would have been easier and cheaper to do a rack up front and 4 link in the rear.
Now for the anti whilomet (@AgDieseler ) part of the build. No fancy gig or tape measure...

(sometimes bricks and a board or two work...plus my Dad thought the car was no longer "stock" do I placed so old Boyd's for sh!ts & giggles & the forkers kinda fit - he thought I was seriously using these rims ans almost had a heart attack. I think I'm out of the will now)

...anyway, picked up a bunch of stuff from an AMC guy who quit AMC's. got a standard 401, bunch of cylinder heads, oil accumulator, a 2/64 low T10, 9" gears and a 1050 cfm of goodness, Holley for my other 70 AMX.

Got the fuel tank mounted and the duel system plumbed today...still hate steel braid.

Also shoved on a set of 26x12.5 MT's on the back. They fit, barely, but they fit. I think they should look good on the 15x8 magnums I have.

The front wheel pic makes me feel funny inside

also, what are those rockers?

Yeah, not a good funny though. But size-wise, with a decent rim & coil overs. It would work.

So clean. Leave the tape measure in the drawer. I think your eyeballs are doing just fine.

David

Thanks but there's a reason that there aren't any pics of the fuel lines...
I'm sure they are parallel to something. Don't know what, but something.
