Anybody know if I can use a 700 from a 90 s10, it was rebuilt stock about 30,000 miles ago. My K5 is a 700. I was told the s-10 trannys are weaker???? Whats the truth?? Also are the transfer cases the same? I have an 83 with a 208 and auto hubs, or is the transfer case different....thanks in advance.....JS

It depends on what engine type the 700 came out of. I am using a 700 from an 89 with a 4.3 that was rebuilt a little sturdier behind my 350 in my blazer. The 2.8 version is a different bellhousing pattern so it wont fit.

It is a 4.3 actually, I neglected to write that. So what do you guys think, can I get away with this rebuilt 4.3 700 or not?? And what about the transfer case, can I use that as a backup???....thanks.....js

I don't know about the tranny, but the T-case would more than likely be a NP 231, the little brother to the 241. The planetary in the 231 is a fair bit weaker than a 241. I'd say its on the weak side for a K5, but who knows it might live. I know the 231 was used in some of the 1/2 ton Dodge pickups, but I don't know if it was the exact same internally.

The 231C uses a 1.25" chain and the 231D uses a 1.5"(I think), so the dooge is a little stronger. There is a s10 over at http://www.s10-4x4.com that uses a 231C behind his 400hp 383 turning 38" swampers and he hasn't had any problems yet.

I don't know if there are any tranny differences.

Isn't a 241 a full time 4wd unit?? This particular S10 has part time. So basically its a gamble to put the S10 700 or the transfer case in the k5. Thanks for the responses.....js
