Let me explain better. I don't have to lift to get any of my three 700R4's to hit OD. It if I lift slightly during normal acceleration, they will shift sooner than if I maintain the same pedal position. This is generally at lower speeds. Gear ratio, governor springs and TV cable settings will change the speed at which each vehicle will shift. I have 2 retro-fitted trucks with shift kits in both. They will both take OD at very low speeds, if I want. And they will hold it with decent throttle input after converter lock-up.
So maybe light throttle is when Sweet's cousin notices the late shift more?
I have read that there is a valve in these to deny OD after 50% throttle input, but an aftermarket one lets it go up to about 75% throttle. Possibly this plays into a delayed upshift at all speeds for some applications. I don't know.
Useless fact,
My '72 C10 with 3:73 gears and 27" tall tires, will hold overdrive past 100 mph, but I don't know how far past, I never had risked the ticket to find out.
