I have a 91 k5 with 350/700r4, the truck has always shifted fine and never leaked a drop of anything. Last friday on my way home from work it was actually warm enough here in ohio to drive with the window down, and all of the sudden I started smelling tranny fluid about 2 miles from my house. I was almost to my driveway and it shifted funny a couple times so I crawled under it when I got home and there was tranny fluid everywhere from the front of the transfer case to the tail lights, pan and all lines and connections are dry so im thinking its a seal or gasket. I havent owned it long but a few weeks ago I was greasing the drivetrain and found that all the bolts that attach the front driveshaft to the transfer case were ready to fall out, I checked the yoke to see if it was loose and replaced the bolts and tightened it, could this yoke seal blow out that much fluid? Anyone else have this happen? Any help would be great, and no I havent cleaned it all off and looked yet due to weather but it was wettest where the front shaft bolts to transfer

If it actually started shifting funny/weird, to me it sounds like it overheated for some reason and pushed fluid out of the vent tube up on top of the trans.

Check the fluid level, color and smell.

I dont think thats the case, it started shifting funny because all the fluid blew out, the leak is down low and towards the rear, I checked the vent tube, I drove it several miles after I smelled tranny fluid because it was shifting fine, I live on a big hill and it shifted funny when it downshifted to climb the hill, other then that it was fine

Fluid level is low cause it all blew out and it looks and smells normal

I know MY transfer case takes atf the same as the trans however , I believe the transfer case is not pressurized and is also seperate from the tranny fluid, so I guess what im asking is, did an internal seal go bad and let tranny fluid from the trans into the transfer case and build enough pressure to find the weakest link (worn yoke seal?) And push it out by the front driveshaft? and could this be caused by a clogged vent? also, I am a mechanic but I hate 700r4 trannys and try to avoid them so I dont know much about them

I had a k5 with a 700r4 that randomly, on one occasion, pushed a decent amount of fluid out of the vent tube. It was during the winter time, I noticed it in the snow. I got worried, brought to a trans shop and they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

If the seal between the trans and transfer case (transfer case input seal) is bad, trans fluid can enter the transfer case then push out of the transfer case vent. The second thing I would look for is a crack at the rear of the trans around the part where the adapter bolts on.

Dip stick pop out? You'll just have to trace it as high and far forward as you can, the leak may not be just where it's wettest if it's wind blown.

Im gonna clean it off tomorrow and start it and see if any leaks out and if not ill take it for a ride but from the transfer case forward is bone dry and clean dip stick and such have been checked, its def at the rear somewhere

If I remember, there is a double seal on the input shaft of the transfer case. It took me a bit to find a place that stocked one when I had my trans replaced and I wanted all new seals. I guess it's possible the trans pushed fluid through there, although I honestly can't remember there being fluid in the adapter housing... Mind is just blank on what I was dealing with.

I just wanna get it fixed so I can sell it, Im done messin with it
