700R4 to NP203...Adapter ?

Okay, I did a few searchs, but didn't really come up with something useful. I'm going to run a 700R4 with a NP203/205 doubler. I already have the 203 adapter, and when I get a 700R4, I'll more than likely be getting the 208 adapter as well. I have read that I can use the 203 adapter in conjunction with a spacer, but haven't read anything about it's strength or anything specific. I can also run the 203 adapter if I swap out the output shaft in the 700 with one from AA, but at $160 it doesn't seem like a logic option. Then, the option that I really like since it sounds to be the strongest available, is to redrill and tap the np208 adapter to fit between the 700R4/NP203 combo. I'd really like to do this, but haven't found any details on what & where to actually tap/drill. Anyone have any suggestions on which option to run? Or have any info or links to tapping/drilling a 208 adapter? I've heard it's a fairly easy task, but not much info available. thanks.
 
You are correct on everything except i believe if you use the 208 adapter you will be re-drilling that bolt pattern on the 203 range box, not the other way around. There is nothing wrong with using the 203 adapter and the spacer. If you use the adapter and spacer it makes it easy to return back to a 700/208 or 700/241 without any troubles other than driveshaft lengths. Since you already have the 203 adapter using it and the spacer will be the quickest and cheapest route to take. The adapter is only like $50.00 then you don't have to modify anything.
 
the only thing that i can think of for the shaft is the over all drive train length, you will loose about 3 inches with the short shaft over the spacer, if your running this in a blazer with the doubler the 3 inches could be a big difference
 
The posted website was vague at best.

I know Advanced adapters and ORD has the shaft kit, but the spacer stumps me.

Anyone else?
 
The spacer is about 2" in length. You could easily make your own spacer by using the tranny and t-case adapter as a template. The tranny side needs to be machined just like the adapter side that would bolt against the tranny and the t-case side needs to be machined just like the tranny to accept the adapter.

The difference in length between using the spacer or using the short shaft is only just under 2". Yes in a doubler situation with a short wheel base sometimes every inch counts and the short shaft would be best.
 
No relavence to the topic but Bowtie overdrives offers a 32 spline short shaft for the 700R4 so you can run a 32 spline 203:D. They only want $425 for them to add it to one of their transmissions.

so it's better to have a short shaft 203 or to convert to one when driveline length is at a premium....
 
The short shaft goes into the tranny making the shortest possible situation with a doubler. If you use a short shaft and ONLY a 205 some people have issues with the front driveshaft hitting the tranny pan.
 
i may buy a 700r4 that won't separate it from the 208. so i'd have the adapter either way. ok. here's what i'm thinking, with the NWF doubler i can clock the np 203, however they state that a custom adapter may be needed. so i could set up the clocking of the 203/205 and then set the 700r4 onto the 203 using the 208 adapter, this way i can drill/tap where i need to.......just a thought. think it would work? length isn't too much of a concern for me. i'll be moving my front axle forward and rear back. and with the doubler i don't think the d-shaft will hit the tranny pan.
