How do you tell the difference between a 700R4 and a regular trani ? Thanks
Different GM auto tranny's will have different shaped pans. The 700r4 has a square pan. I'm sure more knowledgable folks will chime in soon wil better descriptions and/or links to good sites that can describe the differences and plusses/minuses of each.
i have a great site bookmarked but i dont have my comp right now. Ill post it as soon as possible. It has a guide to all the pan designs of chevy transmissions.
a 700r4 will be a 4 speed auto, like this p-r-n-OD-D-2-1 and a "regular" trani will be p-r-n-d-2-1
this link should take you to a page that has all the pan patterns for tranny's and tells you how to identify them it also has some of the specs. tranny identification /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Someone already gave you the link to the identificztion, but I have to say this:
What do you mean a regular tranny?
There are many trannies so you have to say which one you're
Separate names with a comma.
