700R4\'s from Bowtie Overdrive. Anyone heard about these guys?

I talked to these guys today, actually they called me. Need more specific info about my rig before they would quote, talked to the guy for 30min. Impressed, very impressed, I'm sure the tranny shop around the corner would never do these things or have their knowledge. And it will cost the same even after shipping, they pay the first $100. So any opinions would be nice. Thanks, Matt.

They build a good tranny for the price.
    I have their 200R Stage-2 in my 71 ElCamino.

Theres also Art Carr and if you want a virtually distructable trans go here Performance Trans Specialist

Give these guys a call, Phoenix Transmissions. Just installed one of their 4x4HD transmissions, and very happy with the performance and their service and detail. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Several members on this board, including myself have purchased their transmissions. I bought the Stage 3 unit for my '90 K5. I did a lot of reading and comparing on the subject. I'm sure you can just as well-built tranny from any of the other vendors (with a few exceptions) but BTO deals strictly with the 200/700r4 trannies.

For me the decision came down to TCI or BTO. I finally based my purchase decision upon the knowledge of the staff and the word of mouth from many of the members here. I've had it up and operational know for about 2 months and it is a great transmission. Shifts are EXTREMELY firm other than that I couldn't tell you a difference. Based upon my limited experience with the tranny to date and my interactions with their staff I would definitely do business with them again.

Do a search for BTO and see what others have to say about them.

You can PM me with questions if you want.

Got my stage 2 700r4 sitting on the shelf http://lagparty.org/~mike/700r4.jpg ... its even got the advance adapters short 27 spline output shaft for my np205 t-case http://lagparty.org/~mike/700r4shortshaft.jpg

they are in hesperia, 1.5hrs from me and I drove up there.. met the owners and some of their employees. steve the owner worked with me beforehand to make sure everything was gonna work out and what not.. I dont have it running yet but I have no doubts that it was money very well spent. do your research and Ill bet you end up going with them.. Also check out their custom designed and engineered TV-cable adapter for retrofitting the 700 into carb'd applications.. My tv-made-ez setup just came UPS today. its genius.. I would highly recommend them.

Every trans they build gets installed in one of their two test cars. They drive each trans to make sure it is working right before it is allowed to leave.

In order to get the "User Installed" warranty, you have to perform pressure level checks and they recommend a fluid temp check. It costs about another $50 for the test kit but it comes in handy when you want to change your settings.

Call them on the phone, give them the readings, if everything sounds OK they invoke the warranty.

they make you take pressure readings in all the gears with the detent hooked up, unhooked, and at 1500rpm and full detent,

they want an inline magnetic filter for the first 300-500 miles

and they want temperature readings of the trans fluid in the pan, but their pans have the plug for the sending unit already, so thats nice,

then they give you a very detailed list of driving tests to do of different shifts.

and when you call they ask alot of questions, how lines are routed, how did you calibrate your dip stick, etc...

other then the "extreme hardened sunshell", which I am unsure of, this list is pretty typical of EVERY rebuilders stuff strengthwise as the hard parts are all stock.
    same clutches/bands etc
try and break down the differences to find what it is you are PAYING $2g for.
a $150 kit and an hour or so labour plus a few custom sized hydraulic buttons.

these guys are playing on OUR ignorance.
this site should be able to weed out a reputable source with the membership base.

    • Superior High Performance Reprogramming Shift Kit
    • Monster Mega Valve and an oversize low / reverse .500 TV Boost Valve, these two valves produce higher pressure and firmer shifts
    • 10 Vane high performance / high volume pump, which have been tested and proven to be stronger than 13 vane pumps
    • Superior Billet Servo
    • Double High Output Pump Slide Spring
    • 29 element heavy duty forward input sprag
    • Extreme Hardened Sunshell
    • New Filter
    • Re-calibrated spacer plate for improved shift firmness
    • New double lip front and rear seals

The question was about BowTie Overdrives...Not MegaMonster.
I use BTOD transmissions, They're a good trans for the money for those who dont want to rebuild one themselves.
BTOD will also tell you the differences in the parts between the different transmissions.

As was posted above, Performance Trans in Sacramento (builders of the 1000+ HP 200R's for Turbo Buicks) and Art Carr in So Cal are highly spoken of on several other performance boards. They also cost more. Do research and choose who your comfortable with. I have had good luck with BTOD.

why are the splines full of crud?
has it been installed already or ??

    [/ QUOTE ]

crud? what crud? I dont see any splines "full of crud" but on a related note, yes, they install and test drive every 700 they build in their test nova. So to answer your question, yes it been installed already.

I've had a Stage III in my '90 for 2 years and wouldn't use anyone else. Steve and Chris know GM Overdrives better than anyone else. Their support is second to none!
