72 K5 "About Time". Windshield Header Bow time.

I like this build a lot. It seems very hard to find something in Jersey nowadays of this vintage that isn't shot.... looking forward to seeing you bring her back

Thanks! Jersey is rough on the vehicles. If this sat much longer it would have folded in half:eek1:

Looking back at when Greg exposed his rocker boxes his were in far better shape. They probably supported his truck! I bet if I had taken the top off and rode around it would have sagged.

Keep lookin I'll be bringing back this jersey girl!

outer rocker thoughts

I know I am quite a bit away from outer rocker work but I ca t help but wonder how you seasoned guys handled your alignment before final weld.

Did you have a fender in place to make the fit? Or just the door?

My understanding is the outer rocker is purely cosmetic correct? So I can get the rockers structurally sound without the outer on and the truck will be supporting itself at this point? :dunno:

Just curious! Old fenders were ratty and rad support is shot and off as well. This being said I am not in any position anytime soon to have a fender on there. This is why I ask.

Thanks!

doors should always be aligned to fixed factory lines first.. qrter panels and rockers first when possible.... than fenders aligned to the doors...

and vice versa when it comes to a rocker... make sure the door is properly aligned, than fit the new rocker to the door bottom..

I wouldn't final weld the outer on before the fender is back on and aligned with everything else, door, cowl, hood. Everything. :)

On the pass side I ended up doing it twice with a brand new rocker both times. The first time I did it, I had it pulled out as far as I could from the inner and it still wasn't far enough. After some time of walking past it and getting pissed, I finally ripped it out and ordered a new one.

Post #237 adding a filler piece so it could finally look correct.

So yeah, don't weld it till you're happy with it and it looks good with everything else. :doah: :haha:

Yea makes sense to me. I guess I'll tack it into place to make me feel good!:D

Haha :haha: yes I see that makes sense! So tacking will be the way I go!

Hopefully parts will be here this week!

Mike when you added the extra metal to rocker and the million tack welds,
did you have to add any metal to the lower pinch weld area.
I have received most of my repair panels, waiting on right side rocker box
and fab pieces(from Wes) and body mount kit. I want to be sure body is bolted to frame before starting to peel onion.

Hopefully ours won't be needing the filler. Some do and some don't apparently. I am waiting on body mounts from wes as well. He said he was hoping to have them out this week. Did you hear the same thing?

Uh oh!!! 80% of my body parts that I ordered are here! Rocker boxes inner rockers pillars all arrived. Guess who's dicing the onion this sunday!? :D

It's skinny and can get into a lot of spots that the air can't get to. It also cuts from the side too.

I find that a seam buster can sometimes help to reveal a spotweld that you wanted to drill out, but couldn't find....

Usually going along a seam with a roloc disc will remove the paint/rust and show that slight circular silhouette where the spotweld is.... You center punch and drill it. Every once in a while something will be spot welded but you just won't be able to find it..... The seam buster will help to distort the metal just enough around the hidden spotweld to reveal where it is. Then you can drill it out.

I use my seam buster a lot... Definitely a must have tool.

Thanks for the tip!

I ordered one should be here in a couple days.

Lots of stuff to do this am. Good thing I'm in the garage early

Great photo!

Every time a newb shows up on CK5 bragging about the purchase of a "rust free 1st Gen" you can say: "me too....i only needed to replace a few small items"

Then repost that photo and show them what reality looks like!

:haha: :haha: :haha:
