81-91 K5 Cowl Panel

So couple questions on the steel cowl panel that sits by the windshield, behind the hood on these 81-91 GMC Jimmy & K5 Blazers & C10 Trucks, and other related 81-91 Square Body GM Trucks.

I've never removed one before, it looks like it can be done by removing 4 screws on the front lip that screw into the firewall.

From there my best guess at the moment is you have to use your fingers to pull up the back side upward, towards the sky to get it out of wtf ever those 5 widgets are called that are closest to the windshield that appear to hold the back side of the cowl down.

It also looks like it can be done without removing the hood.

Has anybody here removed one from one of these trucks before and if so does this sound right?

Any tips & tricks to not fubaring it up, trying to take it off?

LMCTruck and others I've found that sell this panel & the hardware for it do not sell or even show as unavailable the 5 widgets that go across the backside of this metal cowl panel to hold it down in the back.

Since I can't find any pictures of the bottom side of these aftermarket cowl panels either;
I'm guessing the aftermarket cowl panels don't have anything holding them down in the back & unless you weatherstrip them down or something, you'll never be able to get them to sit down in the back, line up with fenders, hood, cab/windshield. In addition, they'll be flapping in the wind while driving.

Lastly, does anybody know what these 5 widgets are called that hold the back side of the cowl down by the windshield and who sells them?

Thanks in advance.

You have to pull forward and up. Kinda follow the wiper arm posts, since they will hang you up if you don't.
Yes, it can be done without pulling the hood. A plastic pry tool can help move the back studs out of their holes a bit easier while pulling on the cowl. I get both ends loose and the middle usually isn't a problem then.
I don't know where you would buy new studs, never had to.

I really need these 5 widgets that go across the back side of the cowl by the windshield, i see now mine are fubar, which is why my cowl is flapping in the wind & won't sit down in the back. anybody have a parts, assembly manual or somerhing simular for these trucks that lists a part number & description?

thsnks in advance.

I probably have an extra cowl panel or two if you are anywhere close to Sultan, WA.

I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and I don't need a cowl panel i need the 5 widgets that hold the back side of the cowl down closest to the windshield. I can not find a part number & description to further narrow my search by. LMCTruck & others who sell this cowl panel do not show that these 5 widgets even exist, only the cowl panel & the 4 firewall side fasteners.

thanks in advance

I don't believe they are supposed to be removed. I think you need a new cowl panel if they are broken off.

I found some applicable GM Part numbers, descriptions and diagrams:

15598708 - Cowl - Panel, air inl grl
15598709 - Cowl Screen - Screen, w/s frm & plenum pnl
14027555 - Retainer, air inl screen
14039971 (79-84) 15598769 - Retainer, cowl to vent grl
RETAINER. Cowl Ventilator
RETAINER,COWL TO VENT GRL. RETAINER,AIR INL GRL PNL(INNER).
GM 15598769
Retainer Assembly, Cowl Top Vent Panel
1985-1991 GM
15598770 - Retainer, cowl to vent grl (outer)

I still have not found a source or an alternative part, or cross reference seems like the most common related part name is "Cowl Retainer" there's a lot of them out there but I can't find any related gm truck applications listed yet.

I guess I've never looked close at them because I've never had an issue. They must be a screw in stud. I have a set on the 85 I am parting out. I'm just not sure they won't snap off if you try to remove them.
