Dan Johansen Lundahaug submitted a new Build:

83' K5 The Norwegian Crawler

Hello from Norway! I am new to this forum and wants to show you my build. My grammar will probably make some funny moments, but I give it a try!
It is a 83' converted to full convertible. The windshield frame is from a 73', the doors are chopped and so on. It got a low milage 6.2d from a newer Suburban with a TH400.
I bought the truck a year ago with a fresh paint job and new interior for just 6000 dollars! I dont know about the pricing in the us, but thats a bargain over here.

And like every car I have ever owned, it took just a few months before I started modifing it....
Everything in the suspention was sloppy, so I started planing the project.
I ordered:
-Tuff country 6" lift springs in the front
-Shackle flip and lift blocks in the rear.
-Tuff country shocks
-Steel braided brake lines
-Swaybar disconection kit
-Steering steering stabilizers
-14 bolt G80 SF axle in the rear, 10 bolt in the front with 4.56 gears. 8 lug
-38.5x14.5R16 Maxxis tires with 10" wide steel rims
-Pacer flexiflares
-T-max winch
-Bug shield
-External oil cooler for the transmission
-Hyline bonnet vents
I also stripped the frame to bare metal and repainted it. Took the tank down and everything.

There will be much more done to the truck this winter, the "to do" list is long.... Just right now, I am waiting for a twin snorkel kit, turbo and a sun visor for the windshield.

Looking forward to feedback, both positive and negative, to make this project even better!

Nice build so far!

Got my Airflow snorkel kit now. really nice quality! The intake was much bigger then I tought, so I might just go for one instead of two.

Got my sun visor too. Got a little help just to see how it will look. They are holding everything at the wrong angle tho....

What do you think?

Looks like one heck of a start! I’ll be following along I’m jealous

Thank you guys! Just got my turbo kit too. From a 6.5. My plan is too build twin turbo, but i might think two GM turbos will be too much. It would help much with the EGT problem tho.20170925_223305.jpg

Yes this is a really nice forum! We don't have much forums in Norway with this much activity.
Found some pictures from my frame repair I did by the gearbox. Bought the brace and everything at Offroad design. Grinded the crackes down and welded them before welding the plates.

Also some pictures of my fender cutting before the flares.

i love the work on the fenders! Also, your country is one of the most beautiful I have seen.

amazing build! I have an 85 that I'm working to gather parts for to turn into a full convertible. Keep the up with the updates.

sorry for the lack of updates, but the beast is currently in my underground garage under the house. I have had a lt of work to do with all the snow and water damage at my house, and my grandmothers house. It's like 40 years since it was this much snow over here! 20171230_154028.jpg

But before I parked it, I finnished my sun visor! Not sure I like it or not, may lower it and tilt it a little more.

I also ordered new fender flares like this. Each flare is 16cm wide at front, and 13,5cm in the rear. I am so excited!!! I probably need some wider rims... 11898902696_0a06e0cd24_b.jpg

Sorry about the water damage, hope you get that sorted.

Keep posting on the truck, we’re still watching

I have now stopped looking for a Dana 60 front axle, they are impossible to find over here....
But there are plenty of rear ends, so picked up this for 250 dollars. My plan is to tear this apart and build a front axle. I have search trough google and it seems like noone have done it, even some have tought about it.
Is there any reason my plan will fail? Buy and ship one from the USA to Norway would cost me about 3000 dollars, and probably have to change the ball joints, brakes, axle shaft and so on. Seems like I can build one cheaper then that since I want to change everything anyway.

The d60 rear isn’t super common and is more expensive to build with fewer options in relation to a GM 14 FF.

Having said that, they are a usable piece if you have to parts to make it do what you need

If you can find 14 bolt full floater rear ends over there you can build a 14 bolt front axle with parts from online now days.

I have never heard about that. I will look into that! The 14bff are just as common as the Dana 60 rear end, but just the ones from the gmt400 chassie. I guess that doesnt matter in this case.

My fender flares arrived! Great quality fiberglass with decent fitment! They got some smal cracks and dings some places during shipping, but it is a quick fix. The 38.5" tires look small now.... They are huge!! Fits almost over the flares I already got.
So should I paint them orange, or keep them black?
