84 Crew Cab - Project - "The Tank"

I just noticed you're in Pitt. I went to school there and now I only live a little over an hour away. Do you just do four wheelers or have a full-size rig too?

Thats cool man! As of right now I am just doing the four wheeler thing. This truck is going to be my DD/Tow rig so once it is done I plan on taking another crew cab that I have that is all rusted out and cut my extra crew cab frame down for it and make a full size rig with that. I want to get into wheeling but I figured I needed the tow rig so that the wheeling rig can get to the trails. Where all do you go wheeling at?

That dually didnt happen to come out of central Oklahoma did it? Looks real familiar.

Edit: Nevermind, its very similar to one a buddy had, but not exactly the same. Carry on.

No the dually came from Caney, KS. It was bought in Joplin Mo from Roper GMC/Pontiac dealership. I think the dealership is still in business, but I found in the glove box the business card for the guy that sold the truck back in 85. The truck sat for 8 years before I bought it, I was told they just used it to haul a race car around but I think it had 150,000 miles on it.

I mainly hit Kansas Rock and Disney. I hope to make a trip over to Seymour, MO some day.

Thats cool. Maybe when I get this truck on the road and I start working on my crew cab we could go wheeling some time (Hell I can borrow a 36 foot gooseneck, maybe both our rigs would fit on there). The only thing is I wont have a dana 60 front for the wheeling truck for a while so hopefully i wouldn't break the dana 44. Seems like D60s are hard to come buy around here. Every one I have found is about $1000+ and I dont have that kind of money setting around. I found a guy with a dodge dana 60 out of a 91 for $700 that will be going in this dually.

Yea, 60s are hard to come by around here. I had to go down to Lawton, OK to get mine. If you keep an eye out on craigslist you'll find some decent deals.

Yeah they are, When I first got this dually I was looking every day for one and could never find one. Ill have to keep a look out when I actually start working on the wheeling rig, cause I am sure I could easily break a dana 44.

Cool build Matt! Do you have any pictures of your floor before you cut the trans tunnel out? I was under the impression that all crew cabs have the same floor. Maybe it's just all 4wd crew cabs have the same floor?

Are you all healed now?

Thanks for the help!

I do not have a picture of the floor. It was a low hump all the 4wd have the high hump from what I have seen.

I am now healed up back and work. Been cleaning up the shop so I can have some floor space for the cummins swap. 30 years of stuff that had never moved sure takes a lot of time to clean up. School starts in a week so hopefully I'll get some time to mess with this thing soon.

So I was browsing craigslist the just the other day and came across a guy selling a 4 inch lift kit with shocks and all for $250. I was just going to go with a 2 inch lift for the truck but with the price of the 4 inch lift kit I could not pass it up.

Brand new kit, never opened

So I got to work and in about 30 mins I was able to get the springs installed.

Front sits about 6 inches higher than it did before, the rear needs to come up but I am not going to worry about that till I get the drivetrain in to see how it sets and then adjust the rear from there. I really like how high the truck sets, i just hope the 33's im going to run dont look to small.

It seems to have actually lifted my truck 6 inches but I am sure once the cummins is in that it will settle some more.

Well the guy im picking up my motor just texted me the other day and asked me if I wanted to get my truck running sooner for cheaper right now. So of course I said yes, so he tells me that he has a Allison 500 that will bolt up behind my motor because the motor is out of a freight liner and so it has the SAE bell housing adapter with flex plate and starter so he is going to give me that Allison 500 for me to run for now. I will either keep it if I like it or replace it with a NV4500 and 205. If I do keep it I will need to find a divorced 205.

So I picked up some 285/75r16s for cheap and started mounting them.

Need 1.25" or 1.5" spacers for the rear.

Was taking one tire off the rim and found out it had a tube in it. Started looking at the valve stem and found a wallowed out hole.

So I welded it up and will drill a new one for it soon.

So that's all I have for updates. Gotta figure out how much the front is going to drop with the weight of the motor, transmission and transfercase so that I can figure out how much the rear needs to come up.

Well I have a somewhat small update. Oh wait, I mean a big update. Met up with The guy and finally picked up my motor and trasnfercase. I also got a cracked NV4500 from him that he is letting me borrow it so I can get the mounts made and then I will go get the good transmission from him later.

CUMMINS!

Still have to find a bell housing for the transmission. I did get an adapter plate but we are not 100% sure if it will work or not.

Before I start to mount the motor I am going to box the frame from the front to the back of the cab. I decided that I am going to redo a lot of this and figured I might as well do it right this time then like I did the first time and now I'm going back and changing a lot of things.

Got the cab off today with the help of a couple buddies and my dad. Looks like I will start boxing the frame this weekend.

Well I picked up some steel monday that was scrap to use to box the frame. Its 6 pieces of 10" by 5 ft 1/4 in steel. Should be strong enough.

Last night with the help of a couple buddies and my dad we were able to get the cab off of the frame so that i can box the frame easier. Just gotta move some stuff around in the shop and push the frame back in.

Off topic, but do you have any pics on how that white CUCV grille guard is mounted to that older style bumper on that blue pickup?

It uses all the stock mounting bolts. I pulled it off of a 80's k20 that I bought for parts. It was bolted useing the stock bolts on that too. I'm not sure if that one is off a cucv or not.
