84 cucv: Nom nom

Cutting my trip early. Time to get Nom Nom up and running.

Everyone keeps talking about the quad headlight :dunno: No plans on that any time soon, if at all.

There's a lot of confusion on the CUCVs and 12-24v, just the starter was 24v.
99.9% of the truck is 12v, a regular K5.

They're ran in series to provide 24v to starter, and the nato slave adapter to jump other military vehicles. Each alternator is 12v, each battery is 12v. The front battery is ran to the rest of the truck for normal 12v applications.

The only ''conversion'' was since I put in a gasser, I had to buy a new starter that was 12v, otherwise the starter would turn super slow, if at all. And running a wire to the hei, and chopping up the alternator wires.

Yes, you can easily convert to 12 volts. However, I like the 24 volt starter much better. It seems that it has more torque and starts the diesel engine better. Also, just for some information, the two alternators on the CUCV look identical but in fact are not. One is an isolated system. This is so that they don't share a common ground. If you don't use one that is isolated on the 24 volt side, the system will short out and you will have an electrical fire. Don't ask how I know.

So finished up the other day and ran into some issues I'm still working out.

Runs a lot better, no more tapa tapa tapa. :waytogo: Thinking I have some carb related vacuum issues, since I get 15 in hg on the fitting on the manifold, and only 10 at the base port of the carb, that should be full manifold vacuum.

So that and figure out why my secondaries are not opening.

Roommate brought home a present, so I now have a fire extinguisher mounted in the back. It's past it's late inspection due date, but free beats $80.

No work for me, but Nom Nom had a few things to do this weekend.

Took some coaxing, but it pulled it out of the swampy yick.

Just happy I didn't snap an axle

I always like doing stuff like that. Makes me feel glad that I have a 4x4 instead of a Civic or something. What kind of tree was it? Sweet gum? Hard to tell from the picture.

Alder, I probably have a cord from of already, and that trunk that's left over is nearly another. It's 14' long, and probably 36" in diameter. Hard to tell from that picture we also got a chord of poplar. Free heat this year.

If you look in the back of the 2nd pic you can see the base of the tree, another 3 rounds left but it is shaped like a "L", probably why it blew over last winters ice storm.

That should be some good burning wood after it dries out. Way better than the sweet gum that I thought it was. That stuff doesn't do too good as firewood.

What a good haul. Yay for Nom Nom!!! :waytogo:

Been a while, but Nom Nom's no longer getting sold, infact we're driving 2300 miles to Arkansas.

And just for the trip, a nice Qjet

Professional rebuild from a guy who's been doing this forever. Only ran me $200 and my core. Runs soooo much better now. Wish I could stay for a few weeks and learn from someone like him. Just one of those old guys who knows everything about them. Not many around more.

Have fun on your trip. A Quadrajet that's running good is about as good as fuel injection most of the time. I always have trouble getting the electric choke on mine to stay right for some reason though.

Are you going to do any wheeling while you're in Arkansas?

Probably not for a while, at least not until my wife gets something so the Blazer isn't our only vehicle. There's a nice ORV park my wife told me about real close by, so when I get a chance, I'd like to go check it out. Think it's called Super Lift ORV.

I've seen some videos of that place. Looks like they have some killer trails. You better get some buddies to go with you because I think you will get stuck and broke down out there. Be sure and post some pics and vids when you do go. We want to see Nom Nom in action. :D
