On my 86 i have noticed some trans oil on the driveway. What I have dertermined is that the leak is coming for the 4x4 selector. I removed the nut, removed the metal lever and I could see the shaft very well. What I noticed is there is no seal however, it looked like I could see a bushing that the shaft was riding on. It appears that this is put in from the inside(I may be wrong).

The question: Is there supposed to be a seal of some sort?

thanks

What you see with the shift arm off is a plastic spacer and behind that is an o-ring you can get it out with the ad of a pick set. The o-ring can be had from a parts store it is a common o-ring.

so when I remove the shift arm off is there supposed to be a washer or anything like that behind it? Or does the shift arm just go on and then the nut on the outside?

thanks

Nut comes off, shift arm comes off, the litt round spacer that slides over the shaft than you have to fish the o-ring off the case. Than reverse order.
