I will try to keep this short and sweet. Have an 87 K5 with 700r4. Trans went out in it. My buddy has a guy that runs a tranny shop. Got a rebuilt 700r4 to swap in and fix my issues. Got the old one out and new one bolted in and ready to test drive. Here's where the problem is. Also keep in mind, I am pretty clueless to the internal workings of transmissions. Basically when I shift from drive to reverse, down to neutral then overdrive that's where the shifter stops. It won't go down to drive, 2nd or 1st. Climbing under the truck you can manually shift through all the gears on the trans. Here is what is puzzling to me. When the shifter goes into neutral the reverse lights are on and it seems like when the shifter is in the park position that the trans is in overdrive. I am completely puzzled by this. Could the gears have been installed out of wack when it was rebuilt? I am clueless about trannys but will try any advice anyone can provide and will do my best to supply pictures or whatever if need be. I appreciate any info or help. Thank you CK5ers.

I have not climbed under a Chevy in a while, I run Fords, but something you just said is way wrong, and it almost certainly your problem.

First of all, when you change gears in an auto, you do not actually shift any gears. You just move valves in a valve body that controls the parts that cause you to use certain gears.
So, there is no way the "gears could be put in wrong".

Second, the linkage connection from the lever to the transmission is supposed to be solid. So, if the lever goes to a certain point, and will go no farther, then you should not be able to move the shifter on the transmission any farther than that.

Most likely, its a simple matter of an adjustment in the linkage having slipped and needing adjusting.

Which brings me to a really worrisome thought.
This is basic transmission shop 101 stuff. When they got through installing the transmission, they should have moved the shift lever through the positions and made sure the linkage was right.
You would do that as a matter of course before you ever cranked the car.

Certainly the tech would have found that on the first test drive.

So here is the worrying part. The linkage being out of adjustment is not a huge thing.
But, there is a small steel cable that goes from the transmission to the accelerator linkage.
Its called the TV cable. I know, but really is it"s name. On that particular transmission it MUST be adjusted correctly.
It is unrelated to your shifting problems, but if they did not get the shifter right.......

The cable is easy to adjust, you could even do it yourself. But, if it is adjusted wrong, you can burn up a transmission in a very few miles.

The instructions for adjusting one are in lots of places here and on the web. This thing is getting too long for me to post them now.

I would take the car back, ask them to adjust the linkage, or tighten up the adjuster if its loose like it sounds like it might be, and ask them to make sure the TV cable is set right.

I appreciate the reply. I only purchased the trans for someone. This was a driveway install by my buddy and myself. I will climb under there and see if we can adjust that linkage like you said. This is what I get for installing it myself lol. But hey you live and you learn and this has definitely been learning experience for me. I will look for some instructions on adjusting and report back. Like I said, I very much appreciate your reply. This forum is full of amazing people and I appreciate the generosity and willingness to help others.

Sounds good. Remember, DO NOT drive the car without the TV cable attached and adjusted properly.

And that is not the same as the linkage.
Basically, on the linkage, first be sure to chock the wheels. You will be taking it out of park while you are under it, and it will roll.
Then, put the lever in Park, and see if you can move the shifter under the car. If so, and the lever is not moving, see what is slipping, move the under the car part to park and tighten what is moving.
